Scent Theory Seminar: Understanding the Canine Nose
Unlock the extraordinary world of canine scent detection in this seminar designed for dog trainers, handlers, scent work competitors, and enthusiasts. Explore the science behind your dog’s most powerful sense — smell — and learn how to harness it effectively in training, search work, and scent-based enrichment.
This seminar dives into:
• The anatomy and physiology of the canine olfactory system
• How dogs interpret and track scent trails
• Environmental factors that influence scent detection
• Scent theory applications in competition nosework / scent work
Led by CNWI, NACSW CO and Judge, and handler with the NJ Rescue & Recovery K-9 Unit, Donna Hreniuk, this seminar combines scientific theory with practical insights. Whether you're just starting out or looking to deepen your understanding, you'll leave with tools to enhance your dog’s scent detection abilities and your own handling skills.

Workshop Alert! Sunday May 11, 2025
Workshop with CNWI, CO and Judge Jessica Miller at Camp Havaya, 108 Rabbi Jeff Way, South Sterling, PA
Great for teams of all levels. Dogs should be on odor. 10 working teams - $175 (means you will work your dog), unlimited auditors $75 (means you are observing and not bringing a dog).
Description:
This coaching day will focus on helping handlers better understand the overall odor picture and how they can more efficiently interpret their dog's behavior by anticipating how the odor may react to airflow and the environment. If you've ever set a hide and wondered why it didn't work the way you thought, this coaching day is for you. We will discuss different aspects of the search environment, how to plan practice searches that better prepare your dogs for different airflow/environmental scenarios and cover how you can use this knowledge to make quicker assessments of your dog's behavior on your trial days and how to make a plan to cover your search area most efficiently.
The day will begin with a short seminar on how airflow and environmental affects the odor picture and will continue with multiple coached set ups that help you put this new knowledge into practice! Giving handlers knowledge to make better assessments under pressure and how to set better hides in practice for better training!
Big thank you to everyone who came out to do some sniffing and crafts. Thanks to Adrienne, Rochelle, and Pat for judging and to Buffy & Beth for opening the studio to our pups.

Paws n’ Sniff was started by Sarah Woodruff, Certified Nose Work Instructor and scent sport enthusiast. The original goal was to bring more events to the Eastern PA area. Sarah and her rescue dog, Angie, started nose work classes in 2011 and are currently trialing in the NACSW Elite division. They also play in the Performance Scent Dogs and UKC venues.
Sarah currently teaches Nose Work Classes at 2 locations - Let’s Speak Dog in Nazareth PA (www.letsspeakdog.com) and K9JYM in Colmar PA (www.k9jym.com). Classes are designed to teach handlers and dogs the foundation skills to be successful in the sport of nose work regardless of the venue you would like to pursue. And you do not have to compete.
Sarah is a Certified Nose Work instructor with the National Association for Canine Scent Work (www.nacsw.net). She is an NACSW Certifying Official, Trial Coordinator, Score Room Lead, Trial Host and ORT Judge and Certifying Official. She is also a Performance Scent Dog (PSD) Judge.
Nose work is a fun sport where dogs are rewarded for using their nose. First, we start with hiding something that is highly rewarding for the dogs like a favorite toy or delicious treats. Once they learn to "hunt", the reward is paired with the scent of essential oils. Through repetition and exposure, the dogs learn to associate the scent with their reward. Additional challenges are presented with the four main search elements: interiors, exteriors, containers and vehicles.
Handlers can choose whether they want to just have fun and play the sniff game with their dog or may choose to compete in trials. Either way, the dogs benefit from the mental and physical activity the sport offers.
Nose work is a sport for any dog and any handler. No obedience skills are required and this is considered a low impact activity. Dogs work one at a time so this is a great sport for shy and reactive dogs.
