Case Study: Anhydrosis

12 year old Thoroughbred Gelding presented for anhydrosis (non-sweating)

-Goals: Make patient sweat normally
-Tongue: Red (=heat)
-Pulses: Strong (=excess condition such as excess heat in the body or stagnation)
-Points scan: Sensitive in back, sacroiliac joints, and hips
-TCVM diagnosis: Summer Heat, Local Qi/blood stagnation (pain) in the back, SI, and hips
-TCVM treatment plan: Release heat from the body, nourish the Yin (cooling, restorative, nourishing part of the body), move stagnation in back, SI, and hips
-Special points: We utilized hemoacupuncture as well as dry needling and laser in our treatment plan. Hemoacupuncture involves bleeding specific acupoints. This release of blood releases heat from the body quite effectively.
-Outcome: Patient is now sweating normally after his acupuncture session. We repeated one more recently as he is moving back down to Florida where it is still quite warm.
-For known non-sweaters, I recommend restarting acupuncture therapy +\- herbal therapy in the spring before it gets too hot. That way, they will hopefully be sweating normally by the time summer rolls around. Eventually, some of these guys can start sweating normally without further treatment.

Buddy is very special to my heart. He is the sweetest boy with some chronic issues. He typically likes his acupuncture, but for some reason wasn’t tolerating the needles very well this day. Instead of giving up, we pivoted and went for laser acupuncture instead. He tolerated this much better and even decided to lay his head in my lap. Afterwards he laid down and took a nap. *He did not need eye protection because he is already blind.

Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCVM) Hot Topics: Qi and Stagnation

Qi is the “vital energy” or “life force” within an individual. Blood carries Qi through the body, and Qi provides blood with the energy to do so. Therefore, Qi and blood are intimately connected. Free flow of Qi is essential, and allows for the normal functioning of the body’s organ systems. Where Qi does not flow freely, there is stagnation.

Stagnation results in pain and dysfunction.
Stagnation is a very common thing that we see and treat in our animal patients. We can see a stagnation of just Qi (dull aching pain without structural abnormalities present) or a stagnation of Qi and blood (sharp, intense pain associated with structural abnormalities - fracture, arthritis, etc). This can affect Shen (the mind), performance, and quality of life.

Stagnation in one part of the body, can affect other parts of the body as well. Stagnation of Qi in the liver can result in anger, frustration, and even aggression. Liver Qi stagnation can affect the heart and the spleen organs, resulting in Shen disturbance (fear, anxiety, etc) and GI disease (ulcers, vomiting, diarrhea).

TCVM branches of Acupuncture, Herbal therapy, Food therapy, and Tui-Na (Chinese medical massage) are very helpful for helping to relieve stagnation and bringing the body back into balance. This helps to improve patient comfort and health!

Honored to be part of Nina’s veterinary team!

09/12/2026

At 34 years old, Nina has earned every single gray hair, every slow step, and every extra day she gets to spend here. ❤️

But especially over the last year, Nina has really struggled with her shoulder. Her pain became so severe that at one point, our veterinarian told us that euthanasia was something we needed to seriously consider.

And we understood why. We never want any of our animals to live in pain.

But before we were ready to make that decision, we went back to the drawing board with our incredible veterinary team.

We started looking for alternatives beyond oral medications and supplements. What else could we do to help Nina? What could we try to give this 34-year-old girl some more comfortable, happy time?

That’s when we started acupuncture with Dr. Luke .

And y’all… we could not believe the difference.

After her very first appointment, we saw a change in Nina. And now, she receives acupuncture every single week.

We can actually tell when she misses a week.

When Dr. Luke comes every week, Nina continues to thrive. We see the difference before and after her treatments, and it has given us something we desperately wanted for her:

More comfortable days. More happy moments. More time.

Nina may be 34 years old, but we’re not done with her.

And more importantly…

Nina isn’t done either. ❤️

We are so incredibly grateful that we were able to find another path for this sweet old girl, one that has allowed us to keep her comfortable and enjoying her life.

We have no idea how much time we have left with Nina. But as long as she is comfortable, happy, and still telling us she wants to be here, we will keep showing up for her.

Thank you, Dr. Luke, for helping us give Nina more time.

We hope we have SO much more of it. 🥹❤️

Groucho loving his acupuncture and laser session this morning! Groucho does so well for his treatments and loves that he doesn’t even have to leave his bed in the mornings. We use a combination of dry needling, laser acupuncture, aqua acupuncture, and herbal therapy to help him live his best life!

Dr. Luke is treating him for a Kidney Yin and Qi Deficiency (kidney disease) and Yin and Qi Deficient Bi Syndrome (arthritis and pain). Did you know that in Chinese medicine the kidneys control typical kidney function but also control the bones and marrow (brain, spinal cord, nerves)? This means that in tonifying his kidneys, we can help with kidney disease, arthritis, and nerve pain!

A chance to needle is a chance to heal. Honored to be a part of Nina’s medical team.
