I’ve seen a lot of criticism about the new shelter not taking in owner surrenders, drop offs, strays, kittens, puppies….basically not taking in any dogs or cats. It would take a shelter the size of the civic center - along with hundreds of employees - to take in all of Dothan/Houston Cty unwanted animals. Not going to happen. All small rescues around here - and there are MANY, run by volunteers, not much money…..taking in what they can and they are full. What is the solution?? The only solution I know of and have been trying for years to do is SPAY/NEUTER. Felines Under Rescue -FUR has been paying $50 for anyone to the vet of their choice to get their dog/cat fixed to reduce their litters. We also pay for needed medical care for pets if owner cannot afford it SO THAT THE PET OWNER CAN KEEP THEIR PET INSTEAD OF ABANDONING IT BECAUSE THEY CANNOT AFFORD A VET BILL. It makes sense and this is the most sensible and compassionate thing to do for the dogs and cats in this area. Help the animal so that they can stay in the home they have. That will reduce so many stray animals dumped out because they are pregnant and having unwanted litters or ill and in need of medical care.
But it takes more than what FUR can do alone. It takes a lot of donations - which are down - to pay the vet bills. It would be nice to have some business or company to help us. I am turned down by grants because we are NOT a big organization. Every dollar received goes only to pay the vets…..no rent, no salaries, no office, etc. I raise money from the FUR booth at Old South Antique Mall where items are donated for FUR to sell. So far in 2026 FUR has paid for 1,220 dog/cat spay/neuters and 292 dogs/cats have received needed medical care. That is a lot of vet bills. Please donate - and share my posts - so that FUR can continue to help dogs and cats in the Wiregrass when they have no other option!
