One of the first questions I always get is: How big are the parents? People have a very hard time understanding how maine c***s grow and that kittens can outgrow their parents. My largest male kitten to date is 31 pounds at 2 years old. His Dad was 10 pounds lighter. People also need to understand that "intact" cats are much leaner than fixed cats due to hormones. So breeding cat weights are not an indicator of what your kitten will weigh as a full grown adult. Trust the process. Maine C***s are one of the largest domesticated cat breeds in the world and with proper nutrition, will get very big.

Color genetics in cats can seem confusing at first, but once you understand how males and females inherit color, the patterns start to make so much more sense

Male kittens inherit their color from their mother because they receive their single X chromosome from mom and a Y chromosome from dad. Female kittens inherit one color gene from each parent, which is why girls can be solid OR tortie depending on the combination they receive.

This is also why:

• Black females only produce black-based sons

Red females only produce red-based sons

Red males paired with black females produce tortie

daughters

Genetics are one of my favorite parts of breeding Maine C***s because every pairing carries its own possibilities and surprises ❤️
