In the wild, hermit crabs spend their nights exploring, scavenging, climbing, and searching for food. 🍃

Those instincts don’t disappear just because they live in a tank.

Providing natural enrichment gives them opportunities to forage, investigate different textures, and engage in the behaviors they were born to do.

A proper crabitat is about more than meeting their basic needs. It’s about creating an environment where their natural behaviors can thrive.

We can’t give them the wild, but we can give them opportunities to be wild. 🐚❤️

Destin, FL and surrounding areas are preparing for this hurricane. Evacuations have started and now we wait. 🙏🏼

All orders have been taken to the post office, and any orders that come in from now until this thing is over and it’s safe to drive, will go to the post office as soon as I can get there - Monday or Tuesday more than likely. If you order this weekend, I’ll keep you updated.

Hermit crabs were made to walk. 💯

In the wild, land hermit crabs can spend a surprising amount of time traveling and exploring. They search for food, water, shells, and safe places to hide.

That’s why I love giving mine opportunities to move and explore in captivity. This saucer isn’t a requirement, but for a crab who chooses to use it, it can be a fun source of extra movement and enrichment.

And yes … sometimes they’ll walk on it like they have somewhere VERY important to be. 😂

A proper crabitat should still give them plenty of floor space, deep substrate, climbing opportunities, hiding places, and things to forage through. The saucer is just a bonus.

The goal isn’t just keeping them alive, it’s giving them opportunities to use the natural behaviors they were built for. ❤️🐚

Hermit crabs are omnivores, and they need WAY more variety than most people realize.

A balanced diet should offer:

🥩 Animal proteins
🥚 Calcium sources
🥥 Healthy fats
🌾 Grains & seeds
🥕 Fruits & veggies
🌺 Safe botanicals & plant matter

In the wild, hermit crabs are scavengers, so variety is key. Offering different whole foods helps give them access to the nutrients they need.

Beetle is one of my 2 OG’s.

When he came to live with us, he had a dark blue and white striped painted shell that kinda reminded us of Beetlejuice. So, Beetle he became. ❤️🐚

Received my order from Penny Pincher Food Co. and I’m super excited for my guys! 🤗

Beetle just came up from his molt, and he LOVES puffs & worm castings. It was time to restock up both.

I’m excited to have them try the Cod & Blueberry Log!

Packaging was super cute - complete with motivational stickers that will be going on my laptop. ❤️

Land hermit crabs are social animals. In the wild, they’re often found around other hermit crabs, and living with other crabs gives them opportunities to engage in natural social behaviors.

You may see them following each other, tapping antennae, climbing and exploring together, gathering around food, or apparently holding a very important crab meeting in the middle of the night. 😂

But before you run out and get your crab a friend, there’s an important catch.

More crabs means your habitat needs to support more crabs. That means enough space, deep substrate, proper heat and humidity, fresh AND saltwater pools, plenty of food and enrichment, hiding places, and LOTS of appropriately sized preferred shells. 🐚

A companion isn’t a substitute for proper husbandry. 💯

They may be called HERMIT crabs, but that doesn’t mean they’re meant to live like hermits. ❤️
