The first week back is loud for the kids and silent for the dog.

Here's what most families miss: a dog's adjustment doesn't announce itself. It shows up in small, boring ways. Napping at 10 instead of patrolling. Eating on schedule. Treating the front door like furniture again.

The not-settled signs are quiet too, which is why they get missed or mislabeled. Pacing at drop-off time isn't disobedience. An accident from a house-trained dog isn't regression. Chewed window trim isn't a behavior problem. All three are a dog saying the new day still feels too long.

One week is normal. Two weeks of the quiet signs is worth mentioning to your vet.

How did week one go at your house?

The car was half packed before I stopped and thought about it.

We were up in the mountains for a long weekend when Takoda's ear started swelling. Everything nearby was closed, the drive home is three hours in traffic on a good day, and the honest first instinct was just to go.

What changed the weekend wasn't more information. I could have searched for an hour and come back with a hundred answers and no more confidence than when I started. What changed it was having somebody who knows our dog, in the moment I actually needed them. A few minutes with chip, a message to a vet in our network, and a clear answer: this can wait until you're home.

So we stayed. She was seen at home that week.

Looking forward to this great event in The Meadows! 🩷🦴🐾

🐾 The pools may be closing for the season, but we have one special day reserved for our four-legged residents at The Grange!

Mark your calendars for DOGGIE DIVE on September 12 and let your pup make a splash before summer ends!

👩‍🦰🐩 A good rule of thumb for a fun and stress-free day is one human per pup.

🍦 Kona Ice will be serving up Pup Cups to make this tail-wagging event even sweeter!

❤️ We're also collecting pet supply donations for Humane Colorado. Bring an item (or a few) to help support furry friends still searching for their forever homes.

Don't miss this paw-some end-of-summer celebration! 🐾💦

Every house with two dogs has a smart one and a, let's say, sweet one. That's the story we tell. It's almost never true.

A guy with two beagles asked us about this recently, half joking, half serious. One of his dogs picks up a new trick in about four minutes. The other one looks at him like he's speaking a foreign language.

Turns out one beagle works for food and the other one works for scent. Same brain, different currency. He was training them both like they were the cheese dog.

He changed one thing and suddenly had two smart dogs.

Okay, honest answers: which of yours is the genius?

Is it cruel to leave your dog home alone all day? 688 people argued about it on Reddit last week, and almost every answer was some version of "you should feel bad."

Here's what we'd tell a neighbor instead. Dogs don't experience hours the way we count them. They experience patterns. A dog who learned alone-time gradually, gets one real break in the middle of the day, and acts like themselves when you walk out the door is doing fine. Six hours or nine.

The part nobody mentions is that all three of those checks depend on knowing what normal looks like for your specific dog. That's the thing worth writing down.

Colorado gave us the mountains. August occasionally sends the smoke.

Here's the part that's easy to miss: your dog runs their whole day closer to the ground than you do, breathes several times faster, and will absolutely still bring you the leash like nothing's different. The sky being weird is your information, not theirs.

So the plan is simple. Walk early while the air is cleanest. Give the short-nosed dogs a backyard day. Refill the water more than feels necessary. And pay attention at dinner: a cough or red eyes after a hazy day deserves a phone call, not a shrug.

What's your dog's smoke-day mood: dramatic or oblivious?

That was the actual count. Vaccination records in a clinic portal we reset the password for every single time. Appointment reminders in a different app. A photo of a paper record from the old vet, buried somewhere in a camera roll. Advice from a neighborhood group at
midnight from people who'd never met her.

The part that actually got us came later: when something felt off, there was nobody to call who already knew our dog. Not nobody qualified. Nobody who knew her.

That's not a pet owner problem. Everybody built a tool, and nobody built the thing that sits between them.

So we're building it here, in Castle Rock, where we live.

The trail didn't change. The season did.

Everything about a Front Range hike with your dog is different than it was eight weeks ago, and almost nobody adjusts for it. The grass that was green in June is a field of barbed seed heads now. The creek you let her drink from is moving slower and sitting warmer. The rock that felt fine at 6 p.m. is holding heat it didn't hold in spring.

None of this means skip the hike. August is some of the best hiking of the year around here.

It means the five-minute version of the same walk: check her feet at the car, carry water she'll actually drink, and be heading down before the sky decides something.

Same trail, slightly different plan.

Save it for the weekend. 🐾

Eleven weeks of company, kids in and out, someone in the kitchen at 11 a.m. for no reason. Your dog didn't know it was temporary. They just built a routine around it. Most dogs work it out inside a week. The ones who need longer tend to say so quietly: pacing near the door, an accident from a dog who has never had one, the trim by the back door looking rougher than it did Monday.
Every one of those is a dog whose day suddenly got very long, telling you the only way they can.
First day back is the loudest quiet of the year.
What does your dog do when the house finally empties out?

The carrier isn't the problem. The pattern is.

From your cat's side of things, that box has a perfect track record: every single time it appears, the day goes sideways. Car, strange smells, cold table, home. One data point per year, all of them bad. Of course she files it under threat.

The four steps in here are just pattern-breaking, turning the box from a prediction into furniture. It takes a few weeks and costs almost nothing.

What's your cat's current carrier record? Wins, losses, dramatic draws?
