I have two tomato varieties in my garden this year-Brandywine and Two Hawks- with a potato leaf. This kind of leaf is more substantial and seems to be more susceptible to red aphids and spider mites (at least in my garden).
During the WPENA Garden Tour on Saturday many visitors asked about my pest management practices. The general answer is, not much, and honestly I try NOT to ‘manage’ them. All insects are a food source for somebody and who am I to take that food source away?
That being said I do work alongside my ladybug friends and spray the aphids off with a water bottle a couple times a week until they get more established. The leaves are able to survive a little damage and can be snapped off later. Sometimes I use soapy water but usually just plain tap. This way the bugs are still left in the garden (albeit not on the leaves of my beloved tomatoes) for others to forage.
Now potato bugs, they’re a tougher crowd….still working on that one after they devoured 3 squash plants in 24 hours😫
