Remember Romie? The one starting to do big girl things? Today was the big day! Melissa Derbin got to sit on her for the first time! You will notice, no hobbles, no saddle, no bridle.
We completed the work on siding up to the mounting block on the left, then we did the training on the right side as well. We worked via a Pivo coaching lesson. Once Melissa slowed cues down to step by step with pauses, Romie got it within 30 seconds. You can tell by her body language she was totally relaxed and enjoying the scratches in the end. First time sitting on a two year old doesn't have to be dramatic or scary. I'm sure we could have continued on, but the phone died🤣 and it was a good place to stop. Thanks Beth for videoing the last bit for us!

All smiles! These girls (2- and 4-legged) had a great time showing at Columbia Riding Club this weekend! Can't wait for our next outing.
All the hours spent building relationship and foundational skills certainly paid off for Ivy and Dixie! Thank you Glenna Paulman (The Winning Way) and Shaunna Dunlap (White Winds Farm Equestrian Center) for the time you've invested into making so many dreams come true. You can do this from a round pen panel too.
It gets the horse accustomed to seeing you above them out of both eyes. Do it on both sides. We are looking for relaxation, through calm praise and contact.
Romie had a little difficulty figuring out the cue to come closer, so Melissa started on the ground.
Through all the training so far, the horses learn to move away, so it's understandable that move closer is a foreign concept. It can be counter intuitive for a horse.
Make sure your tend to be rude and pushy horses have move away locked in before you teach this. You don't want to teach them that it's Ok to push their hindquarters into your space, especially on the ground. So move to elevation as quickly as they get the concept.
As always keep your safety in mind.

I'm going to post messages (see comments) from my coaching, so you all can see some of what goes on behind the scenes, and the reason and logic as to why this training works. Because Mellissa always asks🤣 Most trainers won't share this with you.
Because 1. It could make you more competitive for life when competing against them. 2. It risks you laying them off because they gave away the methods that make you dependant on them.

Disclaimer: some trainers don't even know this.

You still need eye, feel and timing to be effective, efficient and safe for both you and the horse, but having the secrets put you way ahead of the game!

The session starts in messenger with a message, while drinking coffee, or doing whatever. Once she had all the instructions and the why, she puts it away till she is ready later to start. Once ready pulls the phone out, reviews messages, then begins.

"Take a minute to watch this - the problem isn't unique to dressage. Watch HUS or western pleasure horses going around the pen, and most of them are dragging around their bodies on the forehand as well. Then we wonder why they're broken down by 6 or 8 years old. It's a long game, but my goal is to develop our young horses to move correctly for long-term soundness. Starting in long-lines as yearlings and 2-yr olds helps reinforce healthy movement patterns and allows the young horses to find their balance and posture without interference. Under the guidance of The Winning Way and Glenna Paulman, I can't believe the results we're seeing! I'm so excited for the future of our three young fillies (Romie, Summer, and Doris) - STAY TUNED!!"

"I WANT TO KNOW YOUR THOUGHTS! - My friend and mentor Glenna Paulman sent me this clip this morning. (Take a minute to watch it) - the gist is that we're so focused on dramatic movements that we neglect CORRECT development. Happens in pleasure every bit as much as dressage. I've been experimenting with classical dressage lessons the last 6 months or so, and my fantastic trainer Shaunna Dunlap puts up with my musings! I have a theory that developing my HUS and western pleasure horses in classical dressage, THEN finishing them for their discipline will build correct movement (from behind and over the back) and promote long-term soundness. There are no short cuts to correctly developing a horse. In the modern age of immediate gratification and dopamine addiction, it's a difficult sell to take YEARS to develop correct movement. But I remain hopeful. Also Chloe loves it... so there's that positive reinforcement on a daily basis.
