Did you know African Soft Furs aren’t actually mice or a rat!?

While they look similar to house mice, ASFs belong to a completely different genus called Mastomys. Because they’re genetically different, they cannot successfully breed with common mice or rats.

This unique difference is one of the reasons ASFs have become so popular in the reptile community. Their distinct biology, size range, and a clean high protein nutritional profile set them apart from traditional feeder rodents.

What looks like a mouse or rat is actually something entirely different—a reminder that you can’t always judge a rodent by its whiskers!

🐭 ASF Pregnancy Fact 🐭

Did you know? Female African Soft Furs (ASFs) are pregnant for only about 21-23 days before giving birth to 12-22+ babies! Females also have up to twelve pairs of ni***es which allows them to successfully nurse much larger groups of babies at a time.

That’s less than a month from breeding to babies, which is one reason ASFs are known for being such productive breeders.
