Responsible, ethical breeders are not the cause of the shelter crisis. ❤️
In fact, when breeding is done responsibly, many of the safeguards are specifically designed to keep the dogs we produce OUT of shelters for their entire lives.
At Olive Branch Acres, our responsibility does not end when a puppy leaves at 8 weeks old.
🐾 We use spay/neuter contracts.
Unless a puppy is specifically placed with breeding rights, our puppies are sold with an agreement to be spayed or neutered. This helps prevent accidental litters, backyard breeding and generations of puppies being produced without careful planning or lifelong accountability.
And this matters.
There isn’t a legitimate statistic that says the shelter crisis would disappear in a certain number of years if every pet were altered, but decades of shelter data have shown that reducing unplanned breeding through spaying and neutering has played a major role in dramatically reducing shelter intake and euthanasia.
Imagine the difference if every responsibly placed puppy left with a spay/neuter agreement, every breeder remained accountable for the dogs they produced, and accidental and backyard litters became the exception instead of the norm.
🏡 Every puppy we produce has a lifetime home with us.
If one of our families can no longer keep their dog for ANY reason, at ANY point in that dog’s life, we will take them back.
No judgment. No embarrassing explanation required.
We would rather rearrange our entire household than find out one of our puppies ended up abandoned, surrendered to a shelter or being passed from home to home.
🦴 We work hard to give our puppies a head start on training.
Behavioral struggles are a major reason dogs are rehomed, so before our puppies ever leave us we introduce them to crate training, routines, potty training concepts, household sounds, people and everyday life.
An 8-week-old puppy obviously isn’t going to leave completely trained, but we can absolutely give them a strong foundation and make that transition easier for their new family.
🧬 We health test our breeding dogs.
Unexpected veterinary expenses can sometimes become overwhelming enough that families feel they have no choice but to surrender a pet.
No breeder can guarantee that a dog will never become sick, but health testing allows us to make educated breeding decisions and work to avoid preventable inherited conditions.
🏖️ We continue supporting our families long after pickup day.
Even something as simple as going on vacation can create stress when you’re trying to find someone you trust with your dog.
That’s why puppies from our program are always welcome to come stay with us while their families travel, and we offer affordable boarding for our previous puppies whenever possible.
The shelter crisis is complicated. Dogs enter shelters for many different reasons, and no single solution will fix all of them.
But responsible breeding should look like this:
Carefully planned litters.
Health-tested parents.
Spay/neuter agreements.
Thoughtfully selected homes.
Early training and socialization.
Lifetime breeder support.
And a promise that every dog we produce always has somewhere safe to come home to.
THAT is ethical breeding.
We cannot solve the entire shelter crisis ourselves, but we can make sure we are doing everything within our power to ensure the dogs we bring into this world never become part of it. ❤️🐾
