Don’t let the rain in the forecast this weekend freak you out!
Our dogs don’t need visible blood to track your deer, and the rain actually helps scenting conditions tremendously!
If you aren’t sure of your shot, or you can’t find blood to trail, just back out and give us a call. We’ll be glad to discuss the situation and make a game plan based on the shot, the reaction of the deer, and the weather conditions 👍🏼

6 days until bow season!
Here are a few things you need to do now, before you need us:
1) Get to know your neighbors. It is a felony trespass to cross property lines without permission in Texas, even to find wounded game. Meet your neighbors, swap numbers, and discuss whether or not they’re cool with the possibility of needing to cross the fence to find your deer. Even better, go ahead and get it in writing. A text message, or a quick signed note in your pickup confirming permission is ideal.
2) Find a local tracker or two and make contact with them before you ever need them. Visit with them about procedures and precautions just in case.
3) Grab a pack of clothes pins and surveyors tape. Tie a little strand of that orange tape in the hinge of that pin (10-15 of them), put them in a baggie, and toss that in your pack. Mark your known blood trail even if you don’t think you need to. Ideally you find your deer and can go pick them back up. But if you have to call us we have a plainly marked known line. A stick stuck in the ground after dark does not stand out as easily as you might think.

I usually lay separate lines for the dogs, and then work them separately. This way there’s no chance the second dog is just following where the first one has just been.
The other night I just laid one line though. I worked Duke first, because he’ll be going into his second season, and I want to make dadgum sure he’s working independently. I do work most practice tracks on lead so I can see the dog work and correct anything if need be.
Working Dolly on the same line behind Duke has its own benefits for her too though. We’ve come in behind grid searching, behind the coach pet somebody tried first, or been about the second or third dog to come in and confirm a missed shot for a hunter.
It’s good for her to have to work through the situation and sort the mess out.
Duke did a great job of ignoring “Jeff”, the pet buck someone has let out in our area who is more than content to follow us through the woods at a slight distance🤦🏻‍♀️, and work his line.
I got tangled in the briars and turned loose of the lead. He made haste through the last leg of the track without me!
(The same briars I cut Dolly off in too. Idk how on-lead-only trackers do it😳)
Both dogs are tuned in and ready for bow season🧡🦌

Took advantage of these *slightly* cooler evenings to work some practice lines before season!
Dolly was right on the money. She worked a couple of scent pools in open areas and lined it right back out.
I got tired of fighting the lead in the briars the last 75 yards or so, and cut her off lead. She left me in the dust and I met her at the bait😂
This will be Dolly’s 3rd season for the public and she is LOCKED in and ready to go🧡

All around pup🧡 Duke goes through this routine nearly every morning.
Mini Mare’s first move is to try to go left to the front yard, so once he gets her shut down there her next attempt will be to go through the barn and escape out that way. I’m pretty proud of how he gets up there to block that hole, but then gets back behind her in time to keep her moving forward rather than turning her back around.
He has no formal stock dog training, but that is primarily what he was bred for. Those are the genetics and instincts he uses to bay up your deer 🦌
21 days until bow season!
