Accessible Veterinary Care is expanding our outreach to support local veterans and their pets!

Through a new partnership with VA caseworkers serving veterans in Yolo County, our team is providing pet food and supplies to those in need, as well as veterinary care for veterans who are homebound or face barriers to accessing services. Together with Dr. Planas at the UC Davis Weill School of Veterinary Medicine Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital, we’ve already provided care for approximately a dozen pets.

Donated food from Hill’s Pet Nutrition and Purina and veterinary products from Merck Animal Health and Boehringer Ingelheim Animal Health USA Inc. help make this work possible. As we grow this effort, our goal is to reach more vulnerable community members and help keep their pets healthy, cared for, and by their side.

Fireworks can be stressful for pets, but a little preparation can go a long way toward preventing lost pets and avoidable veterinary emergencies. We're sharing a few practical tips to help keep pets safe this holiday weekend:

- Make sure ID tags and microchip information are up-to-date (you can also write your phone # on their collar if you can’t get a tag in time)
- Keep your pets indoors and secured
- Leave your pets at home when you go out for parties and fireworks
- Keep hazardous materials away from pets (fireworks, sparklers, charcoal, toxic foods, etc)

At the most recent Covelo Clinic, one of our Accessible Veterinary Care programs, volunteers from the UC Davis Weill School of Veterinary Medicine provided essential veterinary care for hundreds of animals in an underserved rural community while helping train the next generation of veterinarians in accessible, community-centered care.

From routine wellness visits and spay/neuter surgeries to helping a severely injured dog named Nala receive lifesaving treatment, the clinic demonstrated how supporting animal health can strengthen the wellbeing of entire communities.
