As a hunter/jumper myself, I know just how much we ask of our horses during a show week. Between schooling, warm-ups, multiple trips to the ring, long days and travel, keeping them feeling their best is always a priority.

EQUINE ANATOMY SERIES • 01 🐴
Distal Forelimb Soft Tissue Anatomy

Here's what's actually happening under your horse's skin when you run your hand down their leg 👇🏼

🤍 Superficial Digital Flexor Tendon (SDFT)
The most superficial tendon on the back of the cannon bone. Flexes the pastern and fetlock joints.

🤍 Deep Digital Flexor Tendon (DDFT)
Sits deeper than the SDFT and travels all the way into the hoof, attaching to the coffin bone.

🤍 Suspensory Ligament
Starts high on the back of the cannon bone and splits into branches lower down. Helps stabilize the fetlock joint.

🤍 Extensor Branch of the Suspensory Ligament
Peels off the suspensory ligament and wraps toward the front of the leg, joining the extensor tendon.

🤍 Superficial Distal Sesamoidean Ligament
Continues down from the sesamoid bones. Helps prevent the fetlock joint from overextending.

💡 The suspensory ligament and SDFT both act like springs, storing and releasing energy with every stride. In a galloping Thoroughbred, strain on the SDFT can reach up to 16%.

Did you know that stress affects more than just your horse's behavior?

When a horse experiences ongoing stress, tension, discomfort, or even intense training, their nervous system can remain in a heightened "fight or flight" state. Over time, this can influence muscle tension, recovery, willingness to relax, and overall comfort.

PEMF supports healthy circulation and normal cellular function. One of the benefits many owners notice is that horses are able to settle into a more relaxed state after a session. This shift toward the parasympathetic nervous system, often called the "rest and recover" state, is where the body is best able to recover, repair, and recharge.

Every horse responds differently, but supporting the nervous system can play an important role in both performance and long term wellness. Whether your horse is preparing for competition, recovering from exercise, or simply enjoying retirement, giving their body the opportunity to recover can make all the difference.

🚨Studies on photobiomodulation (Red Light Therapy) in animals have shown it may help support tissue repair and the body's natural inflammatory response in horses, dogs, and cats. 🚨

One veterinary review found that red and near-infrared light helped improve wound healing, reduce pain, and support recovery from tendon injuries, particularly in performance horses and post-surgical patients. Researchers believe this occurs because the light stimulates mitochondrial activity, increasing cellular energy (ATP) production and providing cells with more energy to carry out normal repair processes.

At Next Stride Wellness, I use the ROC 10-watt shielded Red Light Therapy device. Unlike most red light devices, the ROC is specifically designed to be used simultaneously with MagnaWave PEMF without signal interference, allowing both therapies to complement one another during the same session. Its cordless, quiet design also makes treatments more comfortable for horses and other animals that may be sensitive to noise or bulky equipment.

It’s hard to believe it’s already been one week since we said goodbye to Evie.

Evie was a beloved member of our family for nearly nine years. No matter how many years we're lucky enough to have with the animals we love, it never feels like enough.

Over the past few months, I was grateful to be able to support her comfort alongside her veterinary care. While no therapy can change every outcome, having the opportunity to help keep her comfortable during her final months brought me peace. Wellness isn’t about promising more time. It’s about helping animals feel their best and supporting their quality of life through every stage.

Thank you to everyone who has reached out with kind messages and support over the past week. If I’ve been a little slower to respond, I truly appreciate your patience and understanding.

Hug your pets a little tighter tonight. 🤍
