When u want to surrender your adult dog to the shelter because you work long hours, the kids aren’t helping, and you feel in your heart that your dog deserves more time and attention… please understand this:
The shelter is NOT the place where they are suddenly going to receive that.
We work really hard to make sure our dogs get walks, yard time, enrichment, and love. But at the end of the day, most shelter dogs are still spending about 23 hours a day in a kennel surrounded by barking, stress, noise, and unfamiliar people.
That is not an “upgrade” from your home.
Your dog would rather wait for you on the couch. They would rather nap in your quiet house while you’re at work than sit confused and heartbroken in a shelter kennel wondering why their family never came back.
Dogs sleep a large portion of the day. They do not need perfection. They need consistency, familiarity, comfort, and the people they love.
And when families surrender older dogs who have spent years loving them unconditionally, the sadness and confusion these dogs feel is absolutely heartbreaking.
Before giving up on your dog, really ask yourself:
Is this truly what’s best for THEM?
Or are there ways to make things work a little better at home?
Sometimes dogs need less than we think.
And sometimes staying with the family they love is the greatest gift we can give them.
