Rain is a good thing!
Hunter shot this buck last night in the liver and was fairly confident where he hit the deer. Unfortunately, they tracked too soon because of the rain coming. They ended up bumping the deer and wisely backed out. This was their first time using a tracking dog, and they were unaware of a dog's capabilities after a rain. I told them not to worry and that rain helps bring out the scent more.
I started Gunnar in a cattle pasture where they bumped the deer. He tracked 300 yards to a fence. We crossed the fence into the road and picked the first trail across. I told them if my dog doesn’t like the trail, he will back out of it. Gunnar stuck to the trail, and about 100 yards later, we were on top of his deer.
