🐶🦴 This weekend, I had a couple of clients ask about the chicken jerky treats I was using during sessions - So I wanted to share!

🐾💤 Sometimes training looks like… absolutely nothing. 💤🐾

Meet little Margo! 💕

Margo is currently working on foundational skills as she begins her journey toward potentially becoming a therapy dog someday.

We're working on all those skills people typically think about when they hear “puppy training”
Name recognition, recall, sit, down, wait, engagement, handling, confidence building and more.

But one of the most valuable skills we're teaching Margo?

How to do absolutely nothing. 😴

Learning to settle is an incredibly underrated life skill for puppies and adult dogs. Dogs don't always need to be moving, playing, interacting or receiving direction. They also need to learn that sometimes the expectation is simply:

We're here. Nothing is happening. You can rest. ❤️

For a future therapy dog, that skill becomes especially valuable. There may eventually be periods when Margo needs to quietly hang out while people work, conversations happen, equipment moves around her, or absolutely nothing interesting happens at all.

Sit is important.

Down is important.

Stay and recall are important.

But being able to regulate, relax and settle without needing constant entertainment or interaction?

That's a pretty powerful skill too. 🐾

And apparently little Margo took today's lesson VERY seriously. 😂💤

Sometimes successful puppy training looks like a dog proudly performing a new behavior.

And sometimes…

it looks like a puppy passed out in a dog bed. 🥹❤️

Good job, Margo. Class dismissed. 😂🐾

🛝🐾 WHY ARE WE PLAYING ON THE PLAYGROUND?!

Because sometimes training looks a whole lot like PLAY! 😁🐶

Last night during our Foundations Club, we took training onto the playground. While the dogs may have thought we were just exploring, there was a whole lot of learning happening behind the scenes. 👀

Walking across bridges, stepping onto platforms, navigating stairs, putting paws on unfamiliar surfaces, moving through tighter spaces and exploring sand, grass, wood chips and different textures can help dogs build:

🐾 Proprioception & body awareness: learning where those four feet actually are!

🐾 Balance & coordination

🐾 Confidence around new objects, surfaces and environments.

🐾 Problem-solving skills

🐾 Impulse control & slowing down instead of simply barreling through something.

🐾 Handler engagement: learning to look to their person for information and guidance.

🐾 Environmental resilience: experiencing unfamiliar sights, sounds, textures and movement in a positive, controlled way.

And one of my favorite parts?

The goal isn't to make the dog do the obstacle.

We let them investigate. We encourage curiosity. We reward effort. We adjust the challenge to the individual dog.

One dog may happily trot across a bridge on the first try. Another may need to sniff it, put one paw on it, back away, investigate again and eventually decide,
“Okay human, perhaps this suspicious wooden contraption will not murder me.” 😂

Both dogs are learning. ❤️

I used exercises like these frequently when working with therapy dogs, too. Therapy and service environments can involve elevators, ramps, stairs, unusual flooring, tight spaces, medical equipment and all kinds of things dogs don't encounter during an ordinary walk around the neighborhood.

We can't introduce a dog to every strange thing they'll ever encounter.

But we can teach them how to confidently investigate something new. 💕

So yes…Last night's lesson included playing on the playground.

But underneath all that play?

Confidence. Communication. Coordination. Trust. And a whole lot of learning. 🐾🛝❤️

🐾 FOUNDATIONS CLUB IS BACK - WITH A FEW CHANGES!

Over the summer, Foundations evolved into something I ended up loving even more than our traditional six-week class....so we're keeping it! 💚

Foundations Club is now an ongoing, open-enrollment small group focused on real-life skills for dogs 7 months and older.

This isn't just an obedience class. Depending on the dogs attending, we may work on leash skills, engagement, settling, emotional regulation, impulse control, confidence, social skills, greetings, recall, handling, safe exchanges, and learning how to simply exist calmly while the world keeps moving around them.

And because real dogs don't all need the same thing on the same day, each class is adapted to the dogs in front of me.

📅 Wednesdays | 6:30–7:30 PM

📍 Stolley Park | Grand Island

🐶 Ages 7 months+

💲 $30/class or 8 classes for $200.

🐾 No consecutive-week commitment

📩 Limited spots, message me to reserve before attending.

🫣 Oops… apparently it’s September.

I’m not entirely sure what happened to July and August. I blinked, helped some foster dogs find homes, taught classes, worked with clients, juggled rescue dogs, navigated some health bumps with two of my senior girls… and suddenly we’re almost at the END of September. 😵‍💫😂

Which also means I realized I haven’t actually posted on the Charlotte’s Corner page in… um… awhile. Whoops.

I promise I’m still here! 💓🐾

This summer has been incredibly busy in some really wonderful ways and some slightly chaotic ones.

Several of my own foster dogs headed off to their forever homes, Layla has been navigating some changes in managing her chronic illness, and Mazie Mouse decided a major hematoma sounded like a fun addition to the schedule. Throw in rescue work, Dog Academy, classes, private clients and approximately 47,000 dogs rotating through my house, and apparently my executive functioning quietly packed its bags and left. 🤣

If you have messaged the page and I haven't gotten back to you yet, I have NOT forgotten about you! Facebook messages don't notify my phone the way my regular calls/texts do (intentionally, because my phone already has enough opinions 😂), so I have several messages I'm working my way through. I also have a few families I need to get onto the schedule very soon.

In the meantime, here's our updated fall calendar! 🍂🐶

A couple of little changes:
🐾 Foundations & Life Skills is moving to Wednesdays, 6:30–7:30 PM at Stolley Park and will continue as an open/flexible group.

🐾 Calm & Confident Community Walks are continuing- we have upcoming walks September 24th and October 8th.

☀️ Sunny Weekend Training is BACK (now that it's not 1000°) September 25–28! I'm opening four days of low-cost sessions in Dannebrog or virtually.
Availability is limited and by appointment only, so message me if you'd like a spot.

🐾 Senior Paws Club, Calm & Confident Canines, private training, behavior support and Quick Paws are still here too!

And seriously...thank you for being patient with me.
