Rainbow-Colored Clouds on Mars
This image shows a real phenomenon observed by NASA’s Curiosity rover: extremely high-altitude Martian clouds displaying subtle rainbow-like colors called iridescence, also known as “mother-of-pearl” clouds.

🌈 Why the colors? The colors are produced when sunlight interacts with cloud particles that are very similar in size. This creates pastel shades such as red, green, blue, and purple.

❄️ What are the clouds made of? At these extreme altitudes, the clouds are believed to consist largely of frozen carbon dioxide (dry ice) rather than liquid water.

🛰️ How high are they? NASA estimates the carbon-dioxide-ice clouds in the 2025 observations at roughly 60–80 km (37–50 miles) above the Martian surface.

🌅 They appear around twilight: These “night-shining” clouds can remain illuminated by the Sun after sunset while the surface below is already dark.

🔬 Why scientists care: Their colors provide clues about the size, growth, and evolution of cloud particles, helping researchers understand Mars’ atmosphere.
NASA
Important: They are often described as “rainbow clouds,” but NASA distinguishes this phenomenon from a normal Earth-style rainbow. Mars does not produce ordinary water-droplet rainbows under these conditions.
