Kevin is a great decoy, known him since he was a pup. Good to see him following his passion.

Appreciate the kind words from Oklahoma Barrel Races

Oklahoma Barrel Races is proud to introduce Saber Working Dogs LLC — and y’all, there are some BIG things coming!

As someone who has traveled all over the U.S. with a properly trained protection dog, I 1,000% recommend understanding the difference between a sport-trained protection dog and a true, real-life experienced personal protection dog. Both have their place and both can be incredible, but when you’re talking about real-world protection, experience and proper training matter.

And that is exactly why we’re excited to introduce y’all to Shane and Saber Working Dogs LLC.

Shane’s K9 experience goes all the way back to 1996, when he began training while working for his first police department. He learned to decoy for police K9s and worked in basic scent detection, including an opportunity to train with a United States Customs trainer.

In 2002, Shane was paired with his first K9 partner, Hektor, a black German Shepherd imported from Slovakia. Hektor was trained in explosives detection and patrol work, and during their time together Shane trained with several federal agencies.

His career with working K9s continued from there.

He later worked with K9 Kane, a narcotics detection and patrol dog imported from the Czech Republic, followed by K9 Immo, a narcotics and patrol dog imported from Germany.

In 2015, Shane became an instructor and trainer and trained his fourth detection and patrol dog, K9 Cziko, imported from the Czech Republic. Shane and Cziko had an incredible career together and were able to retire together on July 31, 2021.

Since 2015, Shane has also trained personal protection dogs, sport detection dogs and tracking dogs, while continuing to train police service dogs.

That kind of real-world experience matters.

Saber Working Dogs LLC offers:

• Personal Protection Dogs
• Obedience Training
• Tracking
• Scent Detection
• Private Lessons
• Maintenance Training
• Customized Training
• Optional In-Home Transition Training

Their philosophy is something we especially love: a protection dog should still be a family dog.

Their dogs are trained to live appropriately around adults, children, animals and other family pets while maintaining clear boundaries, communication and the skills expected of a properly trained working dog.

Every dog is different, so training is tailored to the individual dog and family. The goal isn’t simply to train a dog — it’s to build a relationship where you and your dog understand one another and can confidently work together in different environments.

For those purchasing a Personal Protection Dog, Saber offers nationwide delivery, along with optional in-home training to help make the transition into your family as smooth as possible.

Nationwide training for obedience, tracking and scent detection may also be available on a case-by-case basis.

And their support doesn’t stop when the dog goes home.

Saber supports its dogs throughout their entire working lives. Maintenance training is available, and problem-solving sessions are offered free for clients in the North Texas area.

And y’all, this is a must-have.

Let’s face it — we all have dogs. We have a career that keeps us traveling, and our horses have a career that takes them down the road right alongside us.

So why not have a dog with a career, too?

Every barrel racer needs a dog whose job is to protect.

Think about what we actually do. We spend countless hours on the road. We pull into unfamiliar fairgrounds, arenas and overnight stops at all hours. We stay in hotels, trailers and places we’ve never been before. We haul our horses, tack, trailers and equipment everywhere we go.

Sometimes we’re traveling alone. Sometimes we’re unloading or walking back to the trailer late at night.

Having the right dog beside you can mean so much more than simply having a dog riding in the truck.

A properly trained protection dog has a job. They travel with you, live with you, become part of your family and are trained to know when it’s time to work.

We have a career.
Our horses have a career.
Why shouldn’t our dogs have a career, too?

For the barrel racing community, having that kind of trained companion beside you on the road can bring an entirely different level of confidence.

And that is exactly why we are so excited to have Saber Working Dogs LLC joining the Oklahoma Barrel Races community.

And trust us…

THERE ARE BIG THINGS COMING. 👀

Stay tuned, barrel racers.

You’re definitely going to want to follow this one.

This page hit the nail on the head.

This one deserves a conversation.

Barrel racing can look pretty glamorous from the outside. The horses, the big races, the wins, the photos, the friendships and all the miles chasing something we love.

But there’s another side to those miles, especially for women who haul alone.

Pulling into an arena at midnight. Getting fuel in the middle of nowhere. Sleeping in your trailer at a place you’ve never been. Walking back to your rig alone after the race is over. Realizing someone has been paying a little too much attention to where you’re parked.

You learn to be aware.

You share your location. Someone knows where you’re headed and when you should arrive. You think about where you park. You keep your phone charged. You may wait until you’ve left before posting where you were.

And that dog riding sh***un? Sometimes they’re your best friend. Sometimes they’re also there because you feel a whole lot better having them beside you.

The part of the original post that really stood out was women not sharing where they’re entered until they’ve already left.

Think about that.

We have a lot of young girls coming up in this sport. We have women hauling hundreds of miles alone every weekend. We have moms sending daughters down the road without them.

So this is worth talking about.

Women of the barrel racing world, what are your non-negotiables when it comes to staying safe on the road?

What do you always do before leaving home? What have you learned from years of hauling? What would you tell a young woman making her first trip alone?

Drop it below.

Someone reading the comments may pick up one little habit that makes a big difference.

And when you’re at a race, pay attention to the women around you too. If something doesn’t look right, check on her. If she’s walking across a dark parking lot alone, offer to walk with her. If she needs help, be the person who helps.

We can compete when we get to the alleyway and still look out for each other everywhere else. ❤️
