Vaquero Horsemanship: Explaining My Stallion's Spade Bit

What does a spade bit actually do, and why does it take years to bring a horse up into one? In this video I walk through my stallion's spade bit piece by piece: the spoon, the braces, the cricket, and the rein chains, and explain how each part works in a finished bridle horse.

In the Vaquero tradition, the spade is a signal bit, not a stopping tool. A horse carries it lightly and responds to the slightest movement of the reins. It is the end result of years of patient work through the snaffle, hackamore, and two rein.

At Ed's Walking Horses in Crittenden, Kentucky, we raise and train naturally gaited Tennessee Walking Horses the Vaquero way. Never sored, just good horsemanship.

Foot on the gas and the brake at the same time? Not how we ride. 🐴 The vaquero tradition builds a horse up so it stays sound for life. Just look at the 27-year-old horse on Rupert Isaacson's Long Ride Home channel. Big thanks to Rupert. I listen to Live Free Ride Free all the time. Naturally gaited, never sored. Many gaited horses suffer from chronic tension due to constant bit pressure. Retraining requires patience to break the cycle of resistance and help them find a natural, relaxed rhythm again. It is about understanding how the horse feels under the saddle.

Training a horse is less about control and more about calm communication. By focusing on your own breathing and consistent practice, you become a better partner for your horse. Real progress happens when you slow down and find harmony together.

Understanding how your tack setup impacts your horse is key to better communication. By spreading pressure effectively, these chains help your horse become lighter and more responsive over time. Small adjustments lead to big improvements in the saddle.

Many gaited horses suffer from harsh training methods that rely on constant pressure. Instead of focusing solely on the gait, a better approach teaches balance, flexibility, and true connection. It is time to rethink how we prepare these horses for a healthy life.

Your horse feels every ounce of your tension. When you're nervous, they become anxious too. Learning to control your breath doesn't just steady your nerves; it creates a calmer connection for both of you in the saddle. Have you noticed how your horse reacts to your mood?

Many people see this bit and feel concerned, but it is actually one of the most comfortable options for the horse. The design allows for natural mouth movement, and the sound of the cricket is a great way to gauge when your horse is truly relaxed. Have you ever wondered how these tools actually work?
