Tis the Season for Winter Paw Care...
Caring for your dog's paws during snowy, icy, and salty conditions is essential to keep them safe and comfortable. Here are some tips:
1. Protection
Booties: Dog boots are the best option for protection against cold, ice, and salt. Make sure they fit snugly and have good traction.
Paw Balm or Wax: Apply a paw balm like Musher’s Secret before walks. This creates a barrier against salt and prevents paws from drying out.
2. Pre-Walk Preparation
Trim Paw Hair: Keep the fur between your dog's paw pads trimmed to prevent ice balls from forming.
Inspect Paw Pads: Check for cracks or injuries before heading out.
3. During Walks
Avoid Salted Areas: Try to walk on snow or grass instead of salted sidewalks when possible.
Short Walks: Limit the time spent outside in extreme cold to reduce exposure.
4. After Walks
Rinse and Dry: Wash your dog’s paws with warm water after walks to remove salt, ice, and de-icers, which can be toxic.
Check for Injuries: Look for redness, cracks, or lodged debris like ice or gravel.
Moisturize: Apply a paw moisturizer or balm if their pads seem dry.
5. Additional Tips
Hydration: Keep your dog well-hydrated, as healthy paw pads are less likely to crack.
Pet-Friendly De-icer: If you have a yard or driveway, use pet-safe salt alternatives.
For your active, intelligent dogs, boots or balm will be especially important since they may enjoy energetic play in the snow!
