Happy Dairy Month
Let's talk about the farmer and the risks and consumer farmer relationship
Lately I've seen several posts asking about purchasing raw milk from a farmer... But people don't want a herd share or to commit to it. Well that means you want the farmer to take all the risks and to break the law. All so you can try a little novelty.
I have people message me all the time saying they want some raw milk "for their dog" 😉 wink wink. That they've heard If you say that it's for Animal consumption, you won't have to sign up for a herd share. And we aren't taking that risk for a few bucks. It's simply not worth it.
Everyone says they want to support a local farmer until they find out it's not cheaper than the store (you can't get what we have at any store) and that you have to actually make a commitment and put forth consistent effort to do it.
That means you might have to work around somebody else's schedule. At a time that's not only convenient for you, but for them too. It means you can't just show up and get what you want when you want like you do at a grocery store. And some things are seasonal, not on demand so you have to get it while the getting is good. Like the honey. When it's gone, it's gone.
Generally, we deal with very few people for our own sanity. We do not want 500 random people coming to our house unannounced. And i will absolutely not deal with anyone that makes my life harder.
We don't have a roadside stand that is out and available at all hours of the day or night. This means you have to deal with an actual person at a mutually agreed upon time.
And it also means that you might have to talk on the phone first. Some people have a very hard time with that aspect too.
So basically it means you don't get to dictate all the terms. And we don't take all the risk
Realize wanting the benefits and quality of local products from farmers takes work from both participants...the consumer and the producer
Realize that when asking farmers for their products and services. 🐐
