ᑭIᑕ Oᖴ TᕼE ᗪᗩY - peek-a-boo, pika!

From big bears standing tall to tiny pikas popping up from the rocks to see what we’re doing—wildlife sure is curious!

These cute little guys may look like rabbits, but they’re actually in a family all their own. They’re small, surprisingly loud and built for life in cool, rocky mountain areas. Pikas are moving to higher and higher elevations as temperatures rise, so spotting one can take a little luck and good timing 😊

ᑭIᑕ Oᖴ TᕼE ᗪᗩY - unimpressed?

I'm back! Took a little break to get back into the swing of things now that summer is over, and now here I am with this big guy who looked thoroughly unimpressed with us. 🙃 Kind how I feel on Monday mornings, lol. This encounter was really fun - I think it was one of the first times I'd seen a bear stand on it's hind legs, and it was quite the sight! And who couldn't love that crooked nose? (GNP, 2023)

Another Yellowstone bear - he crossed the road right in front of our car so we got a pretty amazing view of him. He isn't as pretty as some, but still impressive! 🌲🐻🗻

ⓕⓞⓡ ⓣⓗⓔ ⓑⓘⓡⓓⓢ - black crowned night heron

Funny how the unexpected photo op - the one I didn't have to hike or wait or hunt for - produces one of my favorite pics of our recent trip. This juvenile night heron paid us a brief visit in the Redwoods, stopping just long enough to check us out and then decide he wanted more privacy and leave. But it was just long enough to get off a shot, and the trees and lighting in the forested pond area we were exploring worked out great. Enjoy!

Bridge closed? Apparently not! Mama elk quietly shepherd their calves along a shortcut to the coast under the cover of the early morning fog. Redwoods National and State Parks.

ᑭIᑕ Oᖴ TᕼE ᗪᗩY - mama black bear

This beauty was foraging off the side of a Yellowstone road, while her cub took a snooze up in the tree. There were so many onlookers that she eventually just settled in for her own nap at the base of it, picking up her head from time to time to let us know she had her eyes on us. We left, but on our return trip we saw that the rangers had blocked of that side of the road - I'm guessing to give her and her cub the chance to leave. The crowd had gotten a little ridiculous and I imagine that cub was likely stuck up there for awhile. We did get some video of the cub, but there was a lot of tree in the way, lol.

Another look at the lupine meadow in GTNP. This was taken in morning light, so we knew we needed to come back, but I still like the way it came out - sun flare and all!

ᑭIᑕ Oᖴ TᕼE ᗪᗩY - stolen treasure

A fox in the hen house? Well, maybe not a hen, but some unlucky creature lost an egg to this fox's breakfast. Mama fox stood on the side of the road and treasured the small snack while we looked on from the car. She looks a little on the skinny side, but we were told she had two larger juvenile kits still feeding. Her coloring was also so interesting!
