Everyone crowded around the puppy cage. 'Look how cute!' 'So energetic!' 'Perfect!'
In the back corner sat a 9-year-old mixed breed with grey around his muzzle and scars on his ears. His card said he'd been there for 287 days.
The shelter worker told me, 'Seniors are harder to place. People want puppies.'
But I didn't want a puppy. I wanted him.
Because while everyone else saw an old dog, I saw:
A dog who's past the chewing phase
A dog who knows what love is and cherishes it
A dog who won't take a single day for granted
A dog who has SO much love left to give
He's been home for 3 months now. He follows me everywhere. Sleeps on my bed. Watches me like I hung the moon.
Senior dogs aren't 'leftovers.' They're survivors. Warriors. They're the ones who loved and lost and still have the courage to love again.
That's not 'settling.' That's winning the lottery. 🎰💛
