I have been told time and time again that judges don’t like my horse. I’ve asked what I could improve on, what we could do better, and most of the time there’s never really an answer.
Every show, every loss, every time I walk out of the ring disappointed, I blame myself before I ever blame my mare. Primrose tries her heart out for me and gives me everything she has every single time. She does her job to the absolute best of her ability, so to me, it’s my responsibility to make her ability even better. I could have rode better. I could have practiced harder. It’s never her fault — it’s mine.
After two years of showing and never being better than second best, you start getting used to never placing. You start expecting disappointment.
So this last weekend, I was honestly shocked when I heard my name called for first place. I was even more shocked hearing the judge talk about how much she LOVED Primrose. After the classes, she came up to me and told me how much she loved my horse and the way I show her off in every class, and if I’m honest, it almost made me cry.
Me and Primrose are slowly but surely getting somewhere as a team. And as hard as it’s been, if it wasn’t for the many shows where we were “never good enough,” the judges who overlooked us, or the competitors who laughed in our direction, we wouldn’t be where we are today.
Being told my horse would never be good enough or that I would never be good enough became the fuel that kept me working, even when it got hard. Even when I questioned if I should give up, I kept going.
That’s why every win, big or small, means so much to me.
And that’s why Primrose means the world to me. 🤍
