If I’ve learned one thing after a week on the trail, it’s that my hips are chronically tight and I need to up my stretching game. I guess that was two things. So I’ll add a third which is that movement and exploration continue to be two of the best balms that I know of to help our dogs exist in this crazy world!

Some days the trail consists of pack walks, puppies and place commands. On the grass. Not really a place command. Just a downstay. On the lawn. But I’m a sucker for alliteration so there you go.

People kept asking how many steps I get in a day doing my job, and it turns out the answer is somewhere between 20 and 25 thousand, which works out to about 10 miles. So I figured I’d put them toward something and start virtually hiking the Appalachian Trail, stacking my training miles from home until they add up to the whole thing.

I wonder how many of those miles will happen inside a twenty foot span, going back and forth over the same patch of grass with a dog who is just starting to work out that the leash isn’t a suggestion. Forty passes at the same mailbox is not much of a view, but it’s the job and a necessary first step like I did with Cody today.

My dog Kousa finds this whole project deeply unimpressive, which is more or less her position on everything I do, and she went ahead and wrote a book about it. It’s called How to Train Your Human, and her argument is that I’m the one in training here and that I’ve been slow about it.

Comment KOUSA and she’ll send you a copy for free, plus the Bruno Diaries, which is five mornings I spent in a neighbor’s driveway with a 70 pound Lab who had very strong opinions about which direction we were headed.

Mondays are a lighter day usually, but the miles keep adding up as I hike with the training dogs in MA! 🥾

What kept me moving today?

Bonding and playing with Keelie the Golden Puppy.

Giving Ellie her wrap up lesson and last day of training with me.

Plus doing some reinforcement work and enriching exploration with Nellie, Meeko and Mr. Bart.

Ok, fine, I could have busted out my old TI-83 and have arrived at a similar conclusion…

11.1 miles down. 59.6 until the North Carolina border. Just not going to consider how many miles until Maine right now… 😅

Meeko, Ellie and Nellie were instrumental in helping me get my steps in today 💪

Also gotta give a shout out to my running partner Kousa for joining me for a few miles today. Sloooowly getting my running mojo back which includes accepting the fact that I need to run at a pace that allows fast walkers to pass me from time to time.

Back on the trail tomorrow. In real life, wrapping up Ellie’s off leash program and spending some time with my post grads Nellie and Meeks.

And, of course, on my new virtual trail lyfe via Walk the Distance 😂

OK… I won’t be carrying any weight on my back, but I will be doing a large amount of mileage in flip-flops while the weather is nice.

I train dogs off leash and in the real world so that they can live their life to the fullest. Now let’s count those off leash miles and see how long it takes to hike the AT while training dogs.

Hope you’ll come along for the trail 🥾🐕

(First check in coming tonight 🤪)

Things my border collie has done recently that I haven’t:

1) Written a book about how to train your human

2) Started an advice column, apparently

I’m just a pair of opposable thumbs and a manager for her these days, I guess 🤷‍♂️
