Besides Labor Day, September 7 is also National Acorn Squash Day celebrating one of fall’s most versatile vegetables. Named for its distinctive acorn shape, this winter squash is most commonly dark green but also comes in golden, white, and variegated varieties.

Acorn squash can be baked, roasted, steamed, sautéed, or stuffed with everything from vegetables and rice to meat and cheese. Even the seeds can be roasted for a tasty snack.

It’s also a nutritious addition to your fall menu, providing fiber, potassium, vitamin C, and other important nutrients. Celebrate by picking up an acorn squash at your local farmers market or grocery store and trying a new fall recipe., maybe the one in the picture!

Labor Day, which falls on September 7 this year, honors the American workers whose skill, dedication, and hard work have helped build and strengthen our country.

The holiday traces its roots to the labor movement of the late 1800s. The first Labor Day celebration was held in New York City on September 5, 1882. As recognition spread across the states, Congress officially established Labor Day as a national holiday in 1894.

Today, Labor Day also marks the unofficial end of summer and gives many Americans a well-earned opportunity to relax, spend time with family and friends, and enjoy one last long summer weekend.

However you spend the day, take a moment to recognize the generations of American workers who have contributed to our communities and our nation.

September 6 is National Read a Book Day! Today is the perfect excuse to slow down, find a cozy spot, and get lost in a good book.

Reading isn’t just enjoyable, it can improve memory and concentration, reduce stress, and keep our minds active. Books can teach us something new, take us back in time, or transport us somewhere completely different without ever leaving home.

Celebrate by picking up an old favorite, discovering something new, visiting your local library or bookstore, or reading aloud to a child, or even your pets!

A few classics and favorites to consider:
Little Women — Louisa May Alcott
David Copperfield — Charles Dickens
Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows — J.K. Rowling
Julie of the Wolves — Jean Craighead George
Where the Red Fern Grows — Wilson Rawls
As Brave As You — Jason Reynolds

Whatever you choose, make a little time today to simply read and enjoy. What book are you reading right now, or what’s one book you’d recommend everyone read?

September 5 is National Cheese Pizza Day!

Pepperoni? Nope.
Sausage? Not today.
Mushrooms, peppers, onions, olives?

HOLD THE TOPPINGS!

For once, we're keeping things simple: crust, sauce, and plenty of glorious, melty CHEESE! Pizza has been around in one form or another for centuries. Ancient Greeks topped flatbreads with oils, herbs, and cheese, while the Romans had their own versions. But the pizza we recognize today really began taking shape in Naples, Italy, where flatbread topped with ingredients such as mozzarella became a favorite. And eventually, America fell head over heels for pizza, too.

While mozzarella may be the classic, there’s no rule saying you can't get a little adventurous today. Try adding provolone, Parmesan, cheddar, gouda, or several cheeses together. Because really, when has more cheese ever been a bad idea?

Coop Cuties wants to know: Thin crust or thick crust? Light cheese or EXTRA cheese? And the big one…could you happily eat a pizza with nothing but cheese, or do you absolutely need toppings?

Celebrate with a slice (or three!) and give a shout-out to your favorite local pizza place. Because sometimes simple really is delicious.

Open the spice cabinet because September 4 celebrates the little jars that can turn an ordinary meal into something delicious! Spices and herbs have been bringing flavor to our kitchens for centuries. A little smoky paprika can wake up chicken, cinnamon and nutmeg can make the whole house smell like fall, and the right combination of garlic, rosemary, basil, or cumin can completely transform dinner.

And here's something interesting: there are several different types of cinnamon, each with its own flavor and aroma. Who knew there was so much happening inside that little jar?

National Spice Blend Day was created in 2021 to celebrate the wonderful combinations of herbs and spices used in kitchens around the world.

Celebrate today by:

Trying a spice you've never used before
Creating your own seasoning blend
Experimenting with a new recipe
Trying flavors from another part of the world
Or finally using one of those mysterious spice jars hiding in the back of the cabinet! 😂

And remember, the difference between “Hmm, this needs something…” and “Oh my goodness, this is GOOD!” might just be another shake of the spice jar.

Coop Cuties wants to know: If you could keep only ONE seasoning or spice in your kitchen, what would it be?

Grab those bowling shoes, pick out your favorite ball, and see if you can knock ’em all down! September 3 celebrates bowling leagues and the generations of people who have gathered at the lanes for a little friendly competition and probably a whole lot of trash talking.

Bowling has quite a history, too! Back in the 1800s, a nine-pin version of the game became so associated with gambling that Connecticut actually banned it. So what did people do? They added another pin! Ten-pin bowling was born, and by 1895, the American Bowling Congress was establishing official rules for the game including the perfect score we still know today: 300!

But why do we call three strikes a “turkey”? One popular explanation goes back to the late 1800s, when bowling three strikes in a row was much harder than it is today. Around Thanksgiving, some bowling alleys offered an actual turkey as a prize to anyone who could do it! Imagine heading out for a night of bowling and coming home carrying Thanksgiving dinner.

Today, bowling leagues bring together men, women, kids, friends, coworkers, and families for competition, exercise, and plenty of fun.

So grab a few friends and hit the lanes today. And if you manage three strikes in a row, be sure to announce: “TURKEY!”

Coop Cuties wants to know: Are you a pretty good bowler or are you just hoping the bumpers are available?

September 2 is National Blueberry Popsicle Day! Fall may be near, but summer isn’t quite finished with us yet! Today gives us one more excuse to enjoy a cold, sweet treat before those cooler fall days arrive. And would you believe the Popsicle was basically invented by accident?

Back in 1905, 11-year-old Frank Epperson left a cup of flavored soda water outside overnight with the stirring stick still in it. The temperature dropped, the mixture froze and the next morning, he discovered a frozen treat on a stick!

Years later, he began selling his creation and eventually called it the Popsicle. More than a century later, we’re still enjoying them. So how should we celebrate National Blueberry Popsicle Day?

🫐 Grab a box of blueberry Popsicles
🫐 Make homemade ones with fresh blueberries
🫐 Share a few with the kids or grandkids
🫐 Toss some in the cooler for one last late-summer picnic
🫐 Or just sit on the porch and enjoy one before it melts!

And if it turns your tongue blue? Well…that’s half the fun.

The Coop Cuties want to know, What’s your favorite Popsicle flavor?
