For horses that tend to get tight or sore through their backs โ including horses dealing with kissing spine โ injections can be a useful part of the treatment plan.
In some cases, medication is used to help quiet painful or reactive areas and allow the horse to move more comfortably, depending on the issue. Muscle relaxers can be a helpful addition to the horse in some situations.
But what you do between injections can be just as important.
The goal isnโt simply to keep treating a sore back. Itโs to create a program that helps the horse develop the strength, mobility and topline needed to better support that back.

Depending on the individual horse, therapies such as VSIS, Equiscope, Shockwave and routine body work can be incorporated to help manage muscle tension, soreness and areas of compensation. These therapies donโt replace proper diagnosis or strengthening โ they can be tools used alongside the overall program.

A strong back needs a strong supporting system. Exercises that appropriately engage the core, hindquarters and topline can help the horse learn to carry itself correctly rather than constantly bracing or compensating.
Hill work, poles, transitions, backing, controlled collection and properly performed groundwork can all have a place depending on the horse.

You canโt build muscle without giving the body what it needs to build it. Adequate quality protein, essential amino acids, calories, vitamins and minerals are important when trying to develop and maintain topline. If a horse is struggling to build muscle despite appropriate work, the entire diet is worth evaluating.

And you cannot out-treat a saddle that doesnโt fit.
Poor saddle fit can create pressure points, muscle guarding and soreness and may continually aggravate a back youโre spending time and money trying to improve. Saddle fit should be evaluated regularly, especially as a horseโs conditioning and topline change.

Veterinary care + appropriate therapy + correct conditioning + nutrition + saddle fit all work together.
For tighter-backed horses, especially those with kissing spine, the best program usually isnโt ONE treatment โ itโs consistent management from every angle.
