🐾❤️ PLEASE PREPARE YOUR PETS FOR THE IMPENDING NOR’EASTER ❤️🐾

With heavy rain, dangerous winds and flooding possible, now is the time to take extra precautions to keep both your family and your animals safe.

Please make sure fences and gates are secure, doors are properly latched, and do not allow pets outside unattended. Dogs should be on a secure leash and properly fitted collar or harness every single time they go outside — even in a fenced yard.

Make sure your pet is wearing identification and that all microchip information, phone numbers and addresses are current.

High winds, flying debris and sudden loud noises can frighten even the calmest animal and cause them to bolt in seconds.

If you see a lost animal during the storm, please do not put yourself in danger. If you can safely contain them, do so. Otherwise, contact animal control or the appropriate local authorities and report their location and direction of travel.
If you have a safe, covered area on your property where a frightened lost animal could seek temporary shelter from the wind and rain, please consider making it accessible if it can be done safely.
It may not look like much at first, but conditions can change quickly. Taking a few precautions now could prevent a family from searching for a beloved pet in dangerous weather.

Please stay safe, look out for one another, and keep those precious paws close. ❤️🐾

Fascinating study -

Long-term stress levels are synchronized in dogs and their owners

"Your dog carries your stress in its body for months. A 2019 study in Scientific Reports measured cortisol in the hair of 58 dogs and their owners over a full year and found that the two rose and fell together. When you are stressed, your dog is stressed. When you calm down, so does it.

The synchrony was not driven by walks, weather, or the dog's own life events. It was driven by the owner. Dogs whose owners scored higher on personality measures of anxiety showed higher cortisol year-round. The dog's body was tracking the owner's emotional state over months, not moments.

The bond between a human and a dog is not a one-way relationship where the human provides and the dog receives. The dog is absorbing the household's emotional weather and carrying it in its endocrine system. Your bad month is its bad month.

This is what 15,000 years of co-evolution looks like. The dog did not just learn to read your face. It learned to sync its chemistry to yours, and the hair on its back is keeping a record of how you have been feeling since the last time it was groomed.

The next time someone says "it's just a dog," the cortisol data says otherwise. The dog is a mirror with a heartbeat, and the reflection goes deeper than behaviour."

Long-term stress levels are synchronized in dogs and their owners.

This study reveals, for the first time, an interspecific synchronization in long-term stress levels. Previously, acute stress, has been shown to be highly contagious both among humans and between individuals of other species. Here, long-term stress synchronization in dogs and their owners was invest...

Never Forget 🙏🇺🇸🙏
Sandee Natasi coordinator of Long Island Labrador Retriever Rescue and Debbie Stonebraker, artist, present Officer David Lim with the portrait of Sirius.
A Memorial Service for Sirius was held on April 24,2002. Earlier that month, Sirius had been posthumously awarded the Victoria Cross at the British Embassy in Manhattan. Almost one hundred police dogs, many wearing badges covered by black ribbon to match those of their handlers and some from as far away as California, filed past the wooden urn containing the ashes of Sirius, as their handlers stopped to salute. Then, David was presented with his companion's stainless steel water bowl, which had been found in his kennel.

"I grieve for those I knew. I grieve for those I never knew. But I grieve the most for the best partner a cop ever had. Sirius is still waiting for me." David Lim.

“On September 11, 2001, Port Authority Police K9 Sirius stood faithfully in his kennel beneath the World Trade Center as his handler, Officer David Lim, rushed to help evacuate survivors. Lim survived the collapse - Sirius did not.

Sirius was the only police dog lost that day. His sacrifice is a solemn reminder of the loyalty, courage, and quiet strength of our K9 partners. He never left his post.

Today, we remember Sirius - a hero in every sense of the word”.
