Interior Grizzly Bear (Ursus arctos horribilis) 🐻🦴
Unlike coastal brown bears who gorge on salmon, interior grizzlies survive almost entirely on berries, roots, and rodents.
To dig through frozen, rocky soil, they evolved an incredible anatomical secret: that iconic shoulder hump isn't fat—it's a massive bundle of pure muscle attached to elongated vertebrae, powering their front legs like a heavy excavator.
Pound-for-pound, their skull leverage and digging muscles make them one of the most mechanically powerful foragers on the planet.

Have you ever tried to reattach antlers after velvet preservation? It is one of the harder things to accomplish and it's particularly difficult to do it well. I am dreaming of my next North slope hunt, which is where many of these boys come from.

Sometimes bears have really poor dental health. This grizzly really only had nubs of upper front teeth, and during whitening they all splintered. I remade them, but they never look as good or gnarly as the originals.

At the end of July, I sat in a presentation on Dall Sheep populations in Alaska hosted by and . It was quite insightful into the rough times sheep and sheep hunters will have for some time. They do fantastic research, but I am happy to see that there are still a few adult rams in the general season units like this one.

Have you ever had a grizzly bear munch on your caribou after you shot it?

This group did. Fortunately only 2 of the 5 had any real damage. The bear was scared off of the pile and no one was harmed. It makes for a really cool story.
