As a trainer, one of the hardest things I witness isn’t children struggling with failure.

It’s parents struggling with it for them.

Somewhere along the way, we’ve confused protecting our children with preparing them.

We rush to explain away the loss.
We blame the judges.
We question the trainer.
We insist they deserved the win.

But sometimes… they didn’t.

And that’s not cruel.
That’s honest.

Showing up doesn’t earn a championship.

Growth does.
Preparation does.
Resilience does.

One of the greatest gifts we can give our children is the ability to lose with humility, learn without excuses, and come back stronger.

Think about a butterfly emerging from its cocoon. If someone cuts it free because the struggle looks too hard, the butterfly never develops the strength to fly.

Children are no different.

Every disappointment, every missed placing, every hard lesson is building something far more valuable than a trophy ever could.

Grit.
Character.
Humility.
Perseverance.

Life isn’t going to hand them a ribbon every time they try.

Our job isn’t to shield them from struggle.

Our job is to prepare them for it, then stand beside them while they discover just how capable they really are.

She was “Cerntly Born With It”✨

This week we celebrate “Mayzee”
my 6-year-old ginger firecracker with the biggest heart and the softest eye.

Fierce when she walks in the pen.
Loyal when the pressure builds.
All give when you ask her to try one more time.

She is personality.
She is presence.
She is power wrapped in copper shine.

Six years young and already teaching lessons in grit, grace, and feel.

Some horses you train.
Some horses train you.

Mayzee does both.

Here’s to more slow, floaty trots…
more brave lope departures…
more late-night dreams of Hunter Under Saddle greatness…
and more moments where she reminds me:

You don’t have to be the biggest in the pen to own it.
