Estes and I went for a stroll to look at the storm clouds. Did a little photo shoot while out and about.

INFORMATIONAL/EDUCATIONAL POST ONLY

Why we cannot board female dogs while they are in heat.

Some boarding facilities follow this, some do not. To each their own, as it is personal preference.

One of our boarding policies here is that we do not accept female dogs while they are actively in their heat cycles.

We know this can be inconvenient so we want to explain why this policy is so important!

1. It attracts male dogs.
A female in heat releases powerful pheromones that can attract intact males from a surprising distance. Even a normally calm male can become extremely interested, stressed, or difficult to manage when a female is in season.

2. It creates a safety concern.
Boarding involves multiple dogs, playtime, potty breaks, outdoor areas, and movement throughout the facility. Keeping a female in heat completely separated from male dogs requires an additional level of management that can increase the risk of an accidental breeding or a dog escaping/trying to reach her.

3. It can cause stress and behavior changes.
Dogs may become restless, anxious, vocal, overly excited, or more reactive or aggressive when a female is in heat. This can change the overall atmosphere of the boarding environment and potentially create unnecessary conflict between dogs.

4. Most importantly, we want every dog here to be safe and comfortable.
Our facility is small and personalized, which means we have the ability to give our guests lots of individual attention, but it also means we have to be very intentional about managing situations that could create unnecessary risk.

If you think your female dog is approaching her heat cycle please let us know as soon as possible. We are happy to work with you on rescheduling her stay once she has completed her cycle.

This policy isn’t about inconveniencing anyone. It’s simply one of the ways we protect your dog, the other dogs in our care, and the integrity of our boarding environment. ❤️ I know all too well how dog behavior works while a dog is in heat, as I run my own breeding program 😂.
