Time to harvest garlic!🧄

For context, I’m in South Jersey, zone 7b, and I planted all hardneck in mid-October. This is the earliest I’ve harvested garlic - I’m guessing the April 90 degree spell accelerated everything.

Garlic is one of the most band-for-your-buck crops in terms of ease of care vs usefulness and deliciousness.

Come learn more next Saturday. I promise many of the projects are done and maybe will give you some garden inspiration. And maybe the unfinished ones and the “don’t look over there” spots will make you feel more at ease about your yard. Either way, it’ll be fun!

You know what you never see in nature? A single tree surrounded by mulch and then 10 feet of grass.

Plants grow and work together. This is the idea behind a fruit tree guild. A planned plant community where everything has a job to do: improve the soil, recruit pollinators and other beneficial insects, and feed the human that put it there.

Using this method you can grow a lot of food in a small space, as demonstrated in this 30’ x 4’ strip of my yard. It has taken 3 years of replacing ‘traditional’ landscape plants with edibles and natives to get it this point. The apricot, blueberries, and grape have fruit, and I think the cherry, apple, and peach will get there next year.

If you’ve grown cucumbers, squash, zucchini, etc for more than a year, you probably understand how many enemies they have.

Ive tried a different approach each year, it seems. Last year using a trap crop was effective but time consuming. I’m going to see if a lure & trap saves me some time. Thanks PawPaw Ridge Homestead for showing the traps on their page - I didn’t even know they existed!

Grass curb strip - blah. But what else can you do with it? Native wildflowers are a great alternative. This year I went all tea, with a little rest area.

As a cis-straight-white man I have the privilege of taking lots of things for granted. Including living in a town where you can see nearly all your neighbors and their kids at pride events and it seems pretty controversy & tension-free.

However, lots of people have and do fight their asses off and deal with a lot that I’ll never see to make it that kind of town. Because of them, my family cares enough to use the right pronouns, can’t comprehend why anyone would be anti-gay, and will have an easier time coming into who they are, whatever that may be.

When in doubt, pick ‘em

This is also true for beans, cucumbers, and a bunch of other plants. Harvest disrupts its quest to drop fully matured seeds so it starts pushing more out.
