# # Keeping Ball Pythons as Pets: What You Should Know 🐍
Ball pythons (*Python regius*) are one of the most popular pet snakes in the world—and for good reason. They’re generally calm, manageable in size, and fascinating to observe. That said, they’re not “low-effort” pets. Proper care is essential for their health and longevity.
# # # Why Ball Pythons Make Popular Pets
* **Docile temperament:** Most ball pythons are shy and tolerant of gentle handling.
* **Manageable size:** Adults usually reach 3–5 feet, making them easier to house than larger snake species.
* **Long lifespan:** With proper care, they can live 20–30 years, so owning one is a long-term commitment.
* **Wide variety of morphs:** Selective breeding has produced many colors and patterns, but care needs are the same for all.
# # # Housing and Enclosure
Ball pythons need a secure enclosure that mimics their natural environment.
* **Size:** Adults typically do well in a 40-gallon enclosure or larger.
* **Hides:** Provide at least two snug hides—one on the warm side and one on the cool side.
* **Substrate:** Coconut husk, cypress mulch, or paper products work well and help retain humidity.
* **Security:** These snakes are escape artists; tight-fitting lids are a must.
# # # Temperature and Humidity
Proper environmental conditions are critical.
* **Warm side:** ~88–92°F (31–33°C)
* **Cool side:** ~75–80°F (24–27°C)
* **Humidity:** 50–60%, with occasional increases during shedding
Use thermostats and digital gauges to monitor conditions accurately.
# # # Feeding
* Ball pythons eat **appropriately sized rodents** (usually mice or rats).
* Adults typically eat every 1–2 weeks; juveniles eat more frequently.
* Many keepers feed frozen-thawed prey for safety and convenience.
* It’s normal for ball pythons to occasionally refuse food, especially during breeding season or shedding.
# # # Handling and Behavior
* Handle gently and confidently, supporting the snake’s body.
* Avoid handling for 48 hours after feeding.
* Stress signs include excessive hiding, defensive striking, or frequent refusal to eat.
# # # Health and Veterinary Care
* Common issues include respiratory infections, mites, and shedding problems.
* Regularly check for clear eyes, healthy skin, and steady weight.
* Find a **reptile-experienced veterinarian** before you need one—this is important.
