Six beautiful little surprises 🤎

Now that we have personally updated everyone on Tilly’s waitlist we would like to introduce our surprising six! Everyone is healthy and thriving so far and mama is doing absolutely incredible.

It was a long day yesterday which ultimately ended up with the last two babies needing help via c section to be delivered but at the end of it all babies and mama are healthy and home! And we couldn’t be more thankful!

The name is not a description of the dog. It is a description of the opponent. 🐾

Dachs is the German word for badger. Hund is dog. She is, quite literally, the badger dog, and the job was never chasing one across a field. It was going down a tunnel alone, in the dark, and holding a badger in place until the people above could dig. What makes that remarkable is the arithmetic. A European badger commonly weighs somewhere between twenty and thirty five pounds, with a bite built for crushing, and the standard dachshund sent down after it weighed around twenty. She was routinely the smaller animal in that tunnel.

Which tells you precisely what the early breeders were selecting for, and it was not size or speed. It was nerve. A dog who would go forward into a space she could not turn around in, meet something bigger than herself, and not lose her head about it. Everything else, the long body, the short legs, the loose skin at the neck, the deep chest holding lung capacity, the loud carrying voice, is engineering built around that one temperament. 🌲

So the next time she plants her feet in a doorway and declines to move for reasons known only to her, you are not looking at bad manners. You are looking at the single trait she was bred hardest for, deployed against a bath. 😄

Nala & Loki had a successful pairing yesterday. We should see babies at the end of October. This will be Nalas first litter and we are so excited.
