𝗜𝘁’𝘀 𝗧𝗶𝗺𝗲 𝘁𝗼 𝗠𝗲𝗲𝘁 𝗗𝗿𝗮𝗮𝗸 🐾

Meet Aim High Gulden Draak, better known as Draak, my Airedale Terrier puppy.
I purposely waited to introduce him. When we bring a puppy home, there’s such a temptation to immediately decide who we think that puppy is going to be: confident, stubborn, sweet, independent, wild, easy, difficult.
But I wanted some time to simply watch him.
For the past month, Draak and I have been getting to know one another. I’ve watched how he explores something new, how he responds when he’s unsure, how quickly he recovers, how he handles frustration, how he interacts with my other dog River. What happens when the world doesn’t go exactly the way he’d like it to?

Of course, I’ve been training him. But I’ve also been listening to him.

Because raising a puppy isn’t just about creating the dog I want him to become. It’s about understanding the dog who arrived.

And now I’m going to bring all of you along for the journey.

Each week I’ll share something we’re working on, a photo from our training, and—probably most importantly—something Draak taught me that week.

I’ve trained a lot of puppies over the years, but every puppy brings something new to the conversation.

And I have a feeling this little Airedale is going to have plenty to say.

𝗬𝗼𝘂 𝗗𝗼𝗻’𝘁 𝗛𝗮𝘃𝗲 𝘁𝗼 𝗧𝗶𝗿𝗲 𝗬𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗗𝗼𝗴 𝗢𝘂𝘁

There’s a common belief that a well-behaved dog is a tired dog.

So we walk farther. Throw the ball longer. Add another activity. Anything to burn off that energy.

But exhaustion and emotional balance aren’t the same thing.

Dogs absolutely need physical activity. They need to move, sniff, explore and experience the world.

But just as importantly, they need to know how to come back down.

Can your dog come home from a walk and relax?

Can they lie quietly while you’re doing something else?

Can they experience excitement without needing the excitement to continue?

Can they simply be?

I don’t want a dog who behaves because I’ve managed to exhaust them.

I want a dog who can enjoy activity, experience the world, and then choose stillness when the activity is over.

That’s emotional balance.

And sometimes it looks exactly like this. 😂

𝗔 𝗣𝗮𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗗𝗼𝗴 𝗜𝘀𝗻’𝘁 𝗔𝗹𝘄𝗮𝘆𝘀 𝗮 𝗛𝗮𝗽𝗽𝘆 𝗗𝗼𝗴

Take a good look at this picture.

At first glance, you might see a happy dog. Her mouth is open, her tongue is out, and she’s sitting nicely for the camera.

But that’s not what was happening.

This dog was extremely nervous and overwhelmed. She was petrified to enter the store, and it took quite a bit of time before she was comfortable enough to walk through the doors.

That’s why context matters when we read our dogs.

An open mouth and tongue don’t automatically mean happy. A wagging tail doesn’t automatically mean friendly. And a dog following a command doesn’t necessarily mean they’re comfortable with what’s happening around them.

Look beyond the behavior.

Look at the eyes. The ears. The mouth. The tension in the face and body. Watch how the dog moves. And most importantly, consider what happened before the moment you’re looking at.

Dogs communicate with us constantly, but we have to learn to listen with our eyes.

This dog didn’t need me to tell her that there was nothing to be afraid of.

She needed time, space, patience, and guidance to work through what she was experiencing.

And eventually, she walked through that door.

That accomplishment may not look as impressive as a perfect heel or a beautiful recall.

But for this dog, it was huge.

YOUR PUPPY DOESN'T NEED MORE EXCITEMENT

One of the biggest mistakes I see with puppies is the belief that they need to be entertained every waking moment.

New toys. New places. New people. New games. More activity.

While puppies certainly need opportunities to explore the world, they also need to learn one of life’s most valuable skills…

How to be still.

A puppy who never learns to settle often becomes an adolescent dog who struggles to relax, constantly looks for stimulation, and finds it difficult to regulate their emotions.

Some of the most important moments in training happen when… nothing is happening.

Your puppy quietly watches the birds, lies beside your chair, chews on a bone, or simply observes the world without feeling the need to react to every sound or movement.

When your puppy chooses to relax… let them.

If they’re peacefully chewing on a bone, lying on their bed, or drifting off to sleep, resist the urge to call them over, pet them, or wake them just because they’re being adorable.

I know it’s tempting.

But those quiet moments are incredibly important.

Your puppy is learning that it’s okay to slow down. That they don’t have to be “on” all the time. That they can simply enjoy the moment.

By protecting those moments of peace, you’re helping your puppy develop emotional balance, confidence, and independence.

Sometimes the greatest act of love isn’t giving your puppy more attention…

It’s giving them the space to simply be a puppy.

𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐃𝐨 𝐂𝐡𝐢𝐥𝐝𝐫𝐞𝐧 𝐋𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐧 𝐅𝐫𝐨𝐦 𝐂𝐚𝐥𝐦 𝐃𝐨𝐠𝐬?
When we think about training our dogs around children, we often focus on safety.
And that's important.
But there's something else happening that deserves our attention.
Children are always learning.
Not just from us…
But from the dogs who share their home.
A calm dog teaches patience.
A calm dog teaches gentleness.
A calm dog teaches that it's okay to slow down.
When a child grows up alongside a dog that feels emotionally secure, they're learning more than how to pet a dog.
They're learning what calm feels like.
Dogs have an incredible ability to influence the emotional atmosphere of a home.
Sometimes they need our guidance to get there.
And when they do…
Everyone benefits.
Including the smallest members of the family.

𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐃𝐨𝐞𝐬 𝐒𝐮𝐜𝐜𝐞𝐬𝐬 𝐋𝐨𝐨𝐤 𝐋𝐢𝐤𝐞?

People often ask me what success looks like after training.
Many expect me to say it’s a perfect sit, a reliable recall, or loose-leash walking.
Those skills are important.
But this…
This is what success looks like to me.

These two dogs are only about 15 feet apart.
One is quietly chewing on a bone.
The other has chosen to curl up on his cot and go to sleep.
No tension.
No competition.
No pacing.
No hovering over the other dog.
No need for constant supervision.

Just two dogs peacefully sharing the same home while making different choices.
One of the greatest gifts we can give our dogs isn’t another command.
It’s the ability to relax.

When dogs feel emotionally secure, they don’t have to constantly monitor one another. They don’t feel the need to compete for space, attention, or resources. They can simply exist.

As trainers, we often celebrate what dogs do.

Sometimes we forget to celebrate what they don’t do.

No barking.
No guarding.
No pestering.
No anxiety.

Just calm.

Ironically, doing nothing is often one of the healthiest behaviors a dog can display.
That kind of calm isn’t created by exhausting a dog or constantly giving commands.
It grows from consistent guidance, clear expectations, and a relationship built on trust.

To me, that is what success looks like.
