One of the most valuable tools in my truck isn’t a medication or surgical instrument—it’s the ultrasound machine.

With ultrasound, we can:

🐄🐐 MEET THE TEAM: THE OTHER HALF TO THE K2 DUO 🩺

You’ve probably seen her riding along in the Sneed Livestock Health Services truck, helping wrangle patients, passing instruments, and keeping things moving on farm calls—but there’s a whole story behind the technician beside Dr. Sneed!

Meet Kaitlyn Spence Howard, our veterinary technician! 🐾

Kaitlyn has been in the veterinary field since she was just 16 years old, making veterinary medicine a huge part of her life for many years. Her experience, work ethic, and love for animals make her an invaluable part of the Sneed Livestock Health Services team.

A few fun facts about Kaitlyn:

🩺 Veterinary medicine since 16: She started working in the veterinary field as a teenager and has continued building her experience ever since.

🐄 Livestock roots: Kaitlyn grew up helping her grandfather tend cattle. That experience gave her an appreciation for the work that goes into raising livestock and a real understanding of the challenges faced by small operations.

🐐 Her own little herd: At home, she has 3 goats, along with a whole flock of chickens!

🐶 The spoiled ones: Her two mini dachshunds make sure there is never a dull moment at home. 😂🐾

🚜 If she’s not working: You can probably find Kaitlyn on the river, working on her trucks, or spending time with her family.

❤️ What makes her a great technician: Kaitlyn brings both veterinary experience and firsthand livestock experience to the job. She understands that every farm is different and that good veterinary care has to work for both the animals and the people raising them. She also keeps Dr. Sneed on her toes!

From the clinic to the farm, Kaitlyn is always ready to jump in, get her hands dirty, and help get the job done. 💪🏼

We’re blessed to have her along for the ride!

🐄🐐 MEET THE TEAM: THE LADY BEHIND THE STETHOSCOPE 🩺

You see the truck pull in, the stethoscope come out, and Dr. Sneed get to work… but what about the person behind the vet?

Meet Dr. Katilyn Sneed, the face behind Sneed Livestock Health Services!

Veterinary medicine has always been more than just a job for Dr. Sneed—it’s a way of life. Her family raises registered Black Angus cattle and registered Boer goats, so when she says she understands the livestock producer’s side of the equation… she really does. 🐄🐐

A few fun facts about Dr. Sneed:

🩺 Favorite animal to work on: Anything that chews its cud! 😂 Give her a cow, goat, or sheep and she’s happy.

🐄 At home: You’ll find her working with her own registered Angus cattle and Boer goats.

🐕 Farm helpers: No good farm is complete without a few four-legged employees! Dr. Sneed’s Australian Shepherds are always close by and help keep things moving around the farm. From tagging along on chores to keeping an eye on the livestock, they take their jobs very seriously. 😉🐾

🌱 Why large animal medicine? She loves being outside, working alongside producers, and solving problems where the animals actually live and work.

🚜 Favorite part of the job: No two days—or farm calls—are ever the same. One day might mean pregnancy ultrasounds, the next a herd health visit, and the next an unexpected emergency.

🐐 A little-known fact: Her own journey into goats started as a way to help clear brush on the farm… and, as most goat people know, it didn’t take long to get completely hooked. 😉

❤️ What matters most: Building relationships with the people who raise these animals and helping them keep their livestock healthy, productive, and thriving.

At the end of the day, Dr. Sneed isn’t just your veterinarian—she’s a livestock producer, a farm girl, a dog lover, and someone who genuinely understands how much these animals mean to the families who raise them.

🐄 Saturday Calving Tip: COLLECT YOUR COLOSTRUM!

When it comes to getting a newborn calf off to the right start, colostrum is one of the most important things you can provide. 🍼🐮

And when possible, nothing beats good-quality colostrum collected from your own herd.

Why? Fresh, properly collected cow colostrum provides the calf with a concentrated source of antibodies and other immune-supporting components that are specifically relevant to the environment your calves are being raised in. Commercial colostrum replacers can be an excellent back-up when maternal colostrum isn’t available or isn’t adequate—but they shouldn’t automatically be the first choice when you have quality colostrum on hand.

💡 Consider collecting and freezing extra colostrum from your best cows.

Keep a supply in the freezer so you’re prepared for:
• Twins or triplets
• A cow with poor or no colostrum
• A heifer that doesn’t have enough milk
• Calves that need additional supplementation
• Any situation where you aren’t confident the calf received enough

⏰ And remember: timing matters!

A calf’s ability to absorb antibodies from colostrum decreases rapidly after birth. The goal is to get high-quality colostrum into the calf as soon as possible—ideally within the first few hours of life and definitely within the first 24 hours.

The first day of a calf’s life can have a HUGE impact on its future health and productivity. Don’t wait until there’s a problem to think about your colostrum supply!

🐄 Collect it. Freeze it. Label it. Have it ready.

A little preparation today can make a big difference when that next calf hits the ground.

Rain or shine, the work gets done. 🌧️🐄

Freeze branding is one of the best methods of permanent identification for cattle, providing a highly visible mark while minimizing hide damage compared to hot branding. It plays an important role in herd management, record keeping, and theft prevention.

Today was extra special because we weren’t just branding cattle—we were also teaching the next generation of veterinarians. Hands-on experience is invaluable, and there’s no better classroom than working alongside producers in the field. From learning proper restraint and branding technique to understanding why permanent identification matters, these future veterinarians gained experience that simply can’t be taught from a textbook.

Whether the skies are blue or the rain rolls in, livestock still need care—and we’re proud to help prepare tomorrow’s veterinarians for the realities of rural practice.

We had a full day of farm visits today! At one visit, we scanned some goats for pregnancy and were able to leave with fresh cut summer flowers grown on the farm.

We are so grateful for the kindness and hospitality our clients have continued to show to us each and every day on the road. 💜🩷

☀️ Summer temperatures are here, and heat stress can quickly impact livestock performance.

Make sure your animals have:
✔️ Clean, fresh water available at all times
✔️ Adequate shade
✔️ Proper ventilation
✔️ Access to mineral supplementation
✔️ Reduced handling during the hottest parts of the day

Heat stress can decrease weight gain, reduce fertility, and impact overall health long before animals appear visibly sick.

Take a few extra minutes to check water tanks and observe your animals during these hot days. Small management changes can make a big difference.

🐄 Check Your Livestock Every Day 🐐

With continued concerns about New World Screwworm moving northward, now is the time to be extra vigilant when checking your livestock.

A quick daily walk-through can help you identify problems before they become major issues. Pay close attention to:

✔️ Open wounds, cuts, or abrasions
✔️ Fresh castration or dehorning sites
✔️ Ear tag injuries
✔️ Navel areas on newborn animals
✔️ Animals that are isolated, depressed, or acting abnormally

Screwworm flies are attracted to wounds and lay eggs in living tissue. Early detection is critical to successful treatment and preventing further spread.

When checking your herd, don’t just count heads—take a few extra minutes to look closely at each animal. Catching a problem early can save both time and money.

If you notice a wound that appears unusually painful, foul-smelling, or contains visible larvae (maggots), contact us immediately.
