It’s $5 Friday! One of our supporters calls it $5 Fido Friday - I think our Fridays will be officially renamed moving forward 🐶
It has been another very busy week and between taking care of the dogs and working full time I haven’t had the time/energy to post as much as I need to.
Here’s the short version of the past couple of weeks:
First I want to address a misunderstanding with the volunteers at the County shelter that I’ve been getting multiple private messages/questions about. Last month when I pulled Charlie Brown & Samantha I also met a Blue Dutch Shepherd that had been sitting at the shelter since April. Very good boy. But huge and not a senior (well 5 so almost a senior for his size). The shelter is trying to get dogs adopted or at least get them out of their kennels temporarily for a change of scenery so they are letting people Foster for a month just to get the dogs out of their kennel runs and get them seen by other people that would normally go to the county shelter. The Shepherd had “happy tail” and his tail was extremely damaged and they were considering docking his tail. Fidos Hopes then Foster Home offered to Foster him to let his tail heal, and they felt they could find him a good home. What is Happy Tail? It is when a dog wags its tail, but it is in a small enough enclosure that the tail is hitting the sides of the Kennel and breaking, and the dog is becoming injured from wagging his tail. Very very sad situation. We pulled Charlie Brown and Samantha and our Foster was to go pick up the Shepherd the following day. The following day are Foster picked him up and brought him home to Foster. Within a week, the foster home found the Shepherd a potential home. We went over the details. They did not meet Fidos Hope‘s adoption requirements. At that point, I was informed that the Shepherd had been fostered under her personal name and not our organization‘s name. I did contact the shelter and confirm this information. And at that point, Fidos Hope was no longer involved with the blue Dutch Shepherd. From what I’ve heard the adoptive home did not work out, and the Shepherd has since been returned to the county shelter. I have gotten multiple messages over multiple days from county volunteers. Inquiring why Fidos Hope returned a dog back to the shelter. I have made it crystal clear to everyone that has reached out that Fidos Hope did not in fact pull this dog or return the dog back to the shelter. This was a personal Foster done by a Fidos Hope foster home. I have been in touch with the shelter, and I am told that the dog is back in adoptions and hopefully will be adopted to a forever loving home ASAP.
During this time, Samantha was not doing well at the Foster‘s home. She was not getting along with the resident dog and I was told was barking nonstop when she was not home she did receive complaints from her neighbors. Samantha came to stay with me during her spa day and is now staying with me until she is adopted.
Also, Sassy is now with me until she is adopted. It’s just easier, Sassy is a medical dog and does require monthly medical care and in the middle of Samantha barking and the Shepherd Sassy developed a raging UTI and had to be medicated and go back -and-forth to the vet for that. So Sassy is now here with me also.
It was never my intention for Fido’s Hope to be a Foster based rescue. We are supposed to be rescuing senior dogs and they do require a lot of medical care, follow up appointments, a lot of times they’re not fully housebroken and seniors medical care can go from fine to not fine very quickly and they need to be closely monitored. I work from home. I’m home 95% of the time. Moving forward Fido’s Hope will not be using foster homes.
Charlie Brown went to the ophthalmologist this past Tuesday and did great. We slightly adjusted his eye meds and hopefully they will keep him comfortable indefinitely. Sometimes the meds don’t work enough, and the dog will have to have a laser medical procedure on both eyes. It’s different for every dog with this condition. Some dogs do great indefinitely some don’t. We will just have to wait and see. For right now he’s doing great and loving life.
In the last three weeks, I’ve had to say no to five very sweet senior dogs that were out of time at the shelter. I was so hopeful another Rescue would be able to pull them. But everyone is over full and we’re all just trying to do the best we can . Unfortunately, all five of them were euthanized. And as much as I know that’s not my fault and I can’t save them all, the last few weeks have felt heavy.
The only major outstanding medical we currently have would be leg x-ray on Jill. But honestly, unless she’s going to be adopted, we really don’t need it. But if I was to send her into an adoptive home, I would like to know exactly what’s going on with her leg. I definitely consider Jill to be a super senior. She does have a bad back leg. She uses it to walk, but definitely could not be left alone on a piece of furniture as she is wobbly and would fall off and injure herself. She does require two eye drops twice a day which cost about $110 a month. She also does have major allergies and gets an allergy shot when needed - that’s about $90
every 4-6 weeks. She does not enjoy being held or sitting on a lap. She does like to be close to you and sit close to you. She could live with another dog, but so far shows very little interest in interacting with them definitely does not play with them. She’s a very good girl and fits in here perfectly. Would she fit in with someone else? Is someone willing to spend $200 + a month on her indefinitely? Is someone able to keep her safe and make sure she does not fall off furniture and further injure her bad back leg? We’ll see.
I have so many more updates but this post is long enough.
