There are no names in this story. But it’s one worth telling, because we live in a world full of scams, and when a scam reaches medicine, an animal pays for it.

A dog came in for an ear cleaning. The moment the solution touched the fur, it ran rust red. That color is flea dirt: digested blood. The crustiness the owner had been feeling in the coat for months wasn’t dry skin. It was flea waste, and there was a lot of it.

Here’s the part that stayed with us. This owner wasn’t neglecting her dog. She had been buying a monthly flea and tick preventive online, no prescription required, and giving it faithfully. She believed her dog was protected. The product almost certainly wasn’t real.
