Ariel's First Sleepover! 🏡

Ariel recently spent a few days recovering from her spay surgery with one of our wonderful volunteers, and she earned rave reviews!

This beautiful young girl is under a year old, weighs 43 pounds, and appears to be a Lab mix with possibly some Chesapeake Bay Retriever in the family tree? Her wavy coat, love of water, and enthusiasm for trying to drink straight from the garden hose certainly fit the bill! 🚿😂

Ariel quickly started figuring out house life, had only a few potty accidents while learning the routine, and proved to be the perfect mix of playtime and nap time. She knows some basic commands, has pretty good recall for a young dog, and was respectful of both the house and the other dogs she met.

If you're looking for a hiking buddy, lake companion, or future boating partner, Ariel might be your girl. She's back at the barn now, healed up and ready to find a foster or forever home. Could that be with you? ❤️ Apply at redbarnrescue.com!

PLEASE SHARE to help Ariel find a foster or adopter!

🎓 Red Barn Rescue would like to give a big WOOF of Congratulations to all of this year's graduates! 🎓

Elvis was excited to help celebrate graduation season with a member of his foster family (Congrats to Emily!!), and seeing all the caps and gowns this time of year got us thinking about the many young people preparing for their next adventure.

We'd also like to give a shoutout to Red Barn Rescue volunteer Sally McGahey on her graduation! Sally regularly makes the drive from Fuquay-Varina to Clayton to volunteer with us, and she hopes to become a veterinarian someday.

As the graduates head off to college, careers, military service, and new opportunities, remember that one of the best ways to stay connected to your community is through volunteering. Animal shelters and rescues everywhere rely on dedicated volunteers, and there are opportunities to help wherever life takes you. (That goes for empty nesters too! When your last kid has graduated and moved out into the world, you can volunteer with all of that extra time on your hands! 😉)

And while we're sharing a little life advice from the rescue world... enjoy your newfound freedom, but think carefully before adopting a pet during major life transitions. Every year, shelters see animals surrendered because someone underestimated the time, financial commitment, housing restrictions, or lifestyle changes that come with college and early adulthood.

Pets are a lifelong commitment. If you're not quite ready for one of your own, consider volunteering or fostering instead. You'll still get plenty of puppy kisses while making a real difference for animals in need.

Congratulations, Class of 2026! Make good choices (as I tell my son: "If you can't be good, be careful"😁 ), and don't forget to give back along the way. ❤️🐾

💕 Piper's Journey Home! 💕

Piper’s journey wasn’t always easy. She was surrendered to a county shelter along with several other dogs after her owner became overwhelmed by the number of animals in the home. Shelter staff noted that Piper had a history of seizures with her owner, but was not receiving veterinary care until she came to the rescue.

Her epilepsy diagnosis meant medications, monitoring, sleepless nights, and a level of care that truly took a village. At one point, Piper's medication schedule even required our director staying up to administer midnight doses while Piper was living at the barn. 😴

Piper was fortunate to have several dedicated fosters who helped her along the way, and we'd be remiss not to recognize them. Diane and Shannon gave Piper a safe place to land during the early weeks of her diagnosis by short term fostering and assessing her needs and temperament. Sandy and Dave later welcomed her into their home and stood by her for the several weeks through medication adjustments, vet visits, and many seizure episodes. Piper enjoyed hiking adventures with one of our favorite Red Barn alumni, Buzz, whom Sandy and Dave adopted last year!

When Sandy and Dave went on vacation recently, Piper stayed with Amber. Amber wasn't planning to foster—she had actually submitted an application because she hoped to adopt a Red Barn dog of her own someday. But when Piper needed a place to stay, Amber stepped up. Unbeknownst to us at drop-off, Amber would experience what became Piper's most seizure-filled week while in rescue care. In just five days, Piper suffered 14 seizures. Amber timed every episode, kept pages of detailed notes, searched for patterns, protected Piper during seizures despite injuries to herself, and kept our team constantly informed—all while working TWO jobs! When we say that fosters are heroes - we really mean it!

Piper's story is proof that rescue truly takes a village. We are incredibly grateful for the volunteers who helped this little girl through some very difficult days. It's because of their dedication that Piper got the chance she deserved, and today, we are thrilled to announce that Piper has officially found her new family! ❤️

There is something especially heartwarming about adopters who intentionally open their hearts and homes to a special needs dog. Piper's new family understands the commitment involved and are willing to take on the responsibility. Thank you!

Congratulations to Piper and her new family! We couldn't be happier for this special little girl!💕

We talk a lot about heartworm prevention in rescue — and for good reason — but Lyme disease prevention matters too. 🐾

Ticks are active here in North Carolina for much of the year, and Lyme disease can cause serious health problems for dogs, including joint pain, fever, lethargy, swollen lymph nodes, and even kidney damage in severe cases. A monthly preventative is far easier (and cheaper!) than treating tick-borne illness later.

Prevention is simple.
✔️ Keep your pets on vet-recommended flea & tick prevention year-round
✔️ Check your dogs for ticks after hikes, walks, or outdoor play
✔️ Keep grass and brush trimmed around your home
✔️ Talk to your vet about Lyme vaccination if appropriate for your area and lifestyle

Did you know Lyme disease can also be tested for annually during your dog’s routine vet visit — often with the same simple blood test used to check for heartworms? These combo tests can also screen for other common tick-borne diseases, which is one more reason annual veterinary care is so important.

Protect your pets so they can keep living their best lives. ❤️
AND if you are looking for a dog to take on a hike, LeBron would love a home with people who love to hike! Just saying 😉

🚨 Breaking News: Velvet has officially mastered the art of being adorable… and somehow still hasn’t been adopted. 🚨

This sweet, snuggly girl has been thriving in foster care. She’s housebroken, crate trained, affectionate, and happiest when she’s shadowing her people from room to room like the world’s cutest little assistant. Velvet has settled beautifully into home life and continues to show everyone what a special dog she is. She's only about a year old and 26 pounds and has been with the rescue since January. 😱 WHY is she not adopted yet?!?

She’s the kind of dog who makes ordinary days better — whether she’s curled up beside you on the couch, making you laugh with her goofy moments, or greeting you like you’re the best thing that’s ever happened every single morning.

Now all she needs is a forever family to finally see what her foster already knows: Velvet is the total package. ❤️

Apply to adopt at redbarnrescue.com

We love seeing updates on Jelly!
🙏PLEASE SHARE THIS POST to help Jelly find her forever home!🙏

Our adorable little chiweenie soaked up the attention at the Strawberry Festival this weekend, showed off her cute personality, and handled the busy event like a champ. In fact… being that cute was apparently exhausting because at one point Jelly sprawled out right in the middle of all the festival chaos and took herself a nap. 😂

This sweet 1-year-old, 20-pound girl is still looking for her forever home. Jelly loves car rides, walks, snuggles, toys, and being close to her people. She’s house-trained, full of personality, and impossible not to smile around.

Jelly would do best in an adult-only home since she can be nervous sometimes (as many small dogs can be), but once she trusts you, she’s a loyal little sidekick with so much love to give.

Apply to adopt Jelly at redbarnrescue.com 💗

Bubba has one of those smiles that can brighten anybody’s day ☀️🐶

This handsome guy has been soaking up the sunshine, flashing his big grin, and reminding us what a happy, loving dog he is — but what Bubba really wants is a foster or forever home of his own.

Bubba is around 60 pounds of sweetness and charm. He loves people, does well with other dogs, and has so much love to give. Whether he’s playing with his toys, riding in the car, or just hanging out with his humans, Bubba is happiest being part of the family.

After being returned through no fault of his own, he’s patiently waiting for someone to give him the second chance he deserves. We know his perfect match is out there.

If you’ve been thinking about fostering or adopting, Bubba would love to meet you 💙

Apply at redbarnrescue.com Please SHARE to help Bubba find his people!

Frankie is ADOPTED! 🎉🐾

This goofy, energetic boy has officially found his forever family, and we couldn’t be happier for him. Frankie came to us as a young pup who needed guidance, structure, and people committed to helping him grow into the amazing dog we knew he could be.

Over time, we watched him learn, mature, and shine — all while keeping that fun-loving personality that made everyone smile. From zoomies and Jolly Ball sessions to eager training moments and cuddle breaks after a busy day, Frankie kept us entertained every step of the way.

Now he’s off to start his next chapter with a family of his very own. ❤️ Happy life, Frankie! We can’t wait for the updates!

Behind the scenes peek! Ariel is having fun in the playyard — but it’s not all play! 🐾

This happy, affectionate young girl is also working on important life skills like “sit for treats,” learning not to jump up, and building confidence with structure and guidance. Like many young dogs who didn’t grow up with consistency or training, Ariel is still a work in progress… but she’s a smart pup who truly wants to learn. ❤️

We love watching her personality blossom more every day, and we know with continued patience, routine, and positive reinforcement, Ariel is going to make an amazing companion.

Ariel is looking for a foster or forever home committed to continuing her journey and helping her become the very best version of herself. Could that be you?
