Joyce Keeton Dog Training & Behavior Consulting

Joyce Keeton Dog Training & Behavior Consulting Humane, fun, effective training and behavior modification. Private and Group Classes. Hi. This was also the beginning of my life as a rescuer.

My name is Joyce Keeton and I love teaching dogs and their humans how to live happily together, for life. My career with dogs started in 1990 when I was hired by the Arlington Animal Welfare League as a Kennel Technician. It was here that I learned about the plight of unloved and unwanted dogs and cats. Over the next 10 years, I worked in many different pet related fields including as a Vet Assist

ant, a Kennel Attendant, a Petsitter, and novice Dog Trainer. I also became involved with Great Dane Rescue and English Bulldog Rescue. In 1999, I opened my first pet hotel, Pets In Paradise, in Lutz FL. One of my first experiences in this new endeavor was being mauled by a client’s dog and ending up in the ER. Even though I was hurt badly, I didn’t want that dog to be euthanized. I wanted to know WHY she did this to me. The more I thought about it, the more I wanted to know how to keep myself safe as well as to help dogs with aggression issues. I enrolled in classes at The American Institute for Animal Science and studied Animal Behavior with a specialization in canines. Upon graduating, I received my certification as a Canine Behavior Counselor from the Association for Animal Behavior Counselors. In 2008, I opened my 2nd pet hotel, The Dog Spot Training & Enrichment Center in Loganville, GA. My focus was on offering quality, loving care for dogs by providing exceptional playcare, boarding, enrichment, and training services. I also started teaching young Trainers the skills necessary to acquire their certifications and tech effectively and humanely. In 2017, I received my certification as a Fear-Free Certified Trainer. This certification is focused on preventing and alleviating fear, anxiety, and stress in pets by addressing their emotional well-being around Veterinary and Grooming visits. In November 2021, I moved to Clayton to focus on my training and enrichment programs. I love living in the mountains and look forward to teaching more and more people that humane training is safe and effective training. Teaching without pain, fear, and intimidation creates calm, confident, optimistic dogs and builds solid human/canine relationships. I now live in Clayton, on the side of a mountain, in my dream home with my partner, Dr. Elizabeth Perry, who is a Veterinarian. We have an assortment of dogs and cats. The number varies as we continue to be involved in rescue and occasionally bring home a rescue to love. I love hiking, camping, hanging out with my dogs, camp fires, going to breweries and wineries, and meeting new people. If you see me around town, I will more than likely be with one of my dogs. I also just bought a (new to me) 1992 Jeep Wrangler and look forward to exploring the back mountain roads.

Had several visitors boarding with us this past week and Tayrne had a blast! He loves playful pups!
Telly, Scotti, and Sadie kept the fun rolling.
We even got some good training in while they were here.

Emotions! Yes...dogs have them.

I haven't posted much lately because ya'll have been keeping me BUSY!! THANK YOU!!!
I get asked for "off leash" training advice all the time. My biggest piece of advice is...
Build a solid, fun, trusting, and safe relationship with your dog. If they don't find you more interesting and safe than sniffs, other dogs and other people, the chance of them being willing to hang around you will be much reduced. Game training is the way to go!

If you are a client of mine and your dog has progressed to playing the "Do Nothing" game in quiet public places...Mondays in town may be perfect.

Nelson and I are all alone on the outside patio at UJ. Enough activity, but not too much.

Holy Batman, Robin!! Lots of super reactive small dogs at UJ today. Poor Nelson was thoroughly cussed out by a chi mix...teeth and all. Got him past that to our table and another chi mix a couple tables down told him ugly things about his Momma. Nelson ignored that and plopped himself down cuz he knows he has the best Mom in the world!
Chalk this up as...we survived and still love chi's.

I received a last minute text asking me to board these two cuties for the day because their petsitter had to cancel at the last minute. I had decided not to work this weekend since my partner is here and we have some friends coming over for a cookout. I have also been very busy with my behavior work and need a little mental break.
Well, how could I say no? Meet Savannah and Bowie. Two perfect angels who fit right in. They love my dogs and cats and the feeling is mutual. They are a fantastic addition to our 4th of July celebration and I am thrilled that their family gets to go enjoy their planned day with friends on the lake.

I had a really neat session yesterday. An 8 y.o. GSD who is very barky at strangers, highly reactive toward things that move (like squirrels), and very intense.

At my 1st session, she barked nonstop at me from 20 feet away inside the home. I had her Mom try to play a treat toss game which only worked marginally because she was only using her food. We went outside so I could give her more distance and we had more success. Note...this was my observation and assessment session so we weren't really working on anything yet.

Fast forward to yesterday. Her mom had been working on a marker (yes) and playing a choice check in game along with working on finding treats her pup found highly rewarding. When she brought her pup out, she was barky at first but she quickly started playing the choice check in game. Success! However, there were still times this pup would stop, stare at me, and start barking. I told her to let her come over and sniff me. She came over and intensely sniffed me and practically climbed on my lap before stepping back and observing me. I handed her a yummy cookie and...we were best friends.

FRUSTRATION!!

So many times we look at barking and reactivity as aggression when it is really frustration at being held back from being able to do something a dog feels they need to do. I recognized this thru this pups body language, bark sound, and instinct. Her mom was so afraid she would escalate and bite me but I told her I felt confident that wouldn't happen. This dog wasn't threatening me, she was beyond frustrated because she wanted to come and check me out. Once that was accomplished and she was satisfied, we quickly became friends. The treats helped out...of course!

This is why it's important to hire a humane, science based trainer and not a shock jock. If the trainer's methods are to shut down responses rather than assessing and meeting needs, cases like this can go very wrong, very fast!

This pup is now on her way to feeling better about guests coming to the house because her Mom now understands her better and we can now work on better emotional regulation and responses.

Choice...a critical component in confidence, happiness, and success!!
