Did you know that the shape of a dog’s lips can tell you if they are completely relaxed,like actually smiling, or highly stressed, or in severe physical danger?Like heat stroke type of danger?You need to look at the commissures (the corners of the mouth)as well as the whole picture.

Here is how to tell the difference:
1. The Relaxed Open Mouth (The True Smile)
• What it looks like: The mouth is softly open, and the corners of the mouth (commissures) are relaxed, neutral, or slightly turned up. You might see a loose, floppy tongue resting gently over the lower teeth.
• The vibe: The eyes are soft, the ears are in a natural position, and the body is loose and wiggly. This dog is happy, content, and safe.
2. The Stress Pant (The Long Lip)
• What it looks like: The mouth is open, but the corners of the mouth are pulled back tightly toward the ears. This is often called a "tight commissure" or a "long lip." The teeth may be more visible, and the panting is rapid and shallow.
• The vibe: The tongue might look rigid or cupped at the end. You will also likely see other signs of stress, like dilated pupils, a furrowed brow, pinned-back ears, or a stiff body. This dog is overwhelmed and needs space or a break.
3. Heat Stroke Alert (The Spatial Lip)
• What it looks like: The mouth is stretched wide open with maximum retraction of the commissures. The tongue is not just hanging out—it is frantically extended, dark red or purple, and often looks wide, flat, or cupped like a shovel. The panting is heavy, loud, and desperate.
• The vibe: This is a medical emergency. The dog may drool excessively (thick, ropey saliva), appear glassy-eyed, lethargic, or unsteady on their feet.

Trainer Tip: Always look at the whole dog! A tight corner of the mouth combined with a tense body means "I’m uncomfortable." A tight corner of the mouth combined with heavy breathing after exercise in the sun means "I need to cool down immediately."

Pay attention to the corners of your dog's mouth!!!!

Real,long lasting change in behavior takes time.It's layered. Quick fixes fail in the long run.

What can we do in one or two sessions is gather info,make environment suggestions,apparatus switches,enrichment suggestions,say call your vet to further look at xyz,set safety protocols in place,introduce how to learn with some very basic skills and implement management.

From there we start to build on those skills,build confidence,repair relationships and start seeing change in the right direction.

Rent yourself a safe good time in a location near you OR SWAP YARDS W FRIENDS AND FAMILY!!!!! You don't need 100 acres to tire out their noses. Just doing a new location and different dogs scent swap can wipe em out too! I always give my friends a heads up when I'm headed out of town and let them know to come use the yard.

I am always striving to better myself and be the best that I can be for you and your dogs. That means continuing my education with courses and conferences(will be out of town next week attending CANIS in Illinois)and books and of course implementing the things I learn with my dogs, your dogs, shelter dogs, etc. I always get geeked out to find a new fabulous book on the market for pet parents and pet professionals that resonates. I also love validation from reading people's literature that I look up to. Not done yet but so far while I'm reading im like Yep! yep! yep! I do that!!!...thanks to Josh K9 Optima for releasing this fabulous read👏 and for reminding me I do actually know some things lol.
