Walnut, Cashew, and Pecan! 🥜
The red-eared slider is a common, medium-sized freshwater turtle known for the red stripe behind its eyes, olive-brown shell, and yellow markings. Adults can reach 4-10 inches in length and living up to 40 years! So they are a long term commitment! They are omnivores, eating plants, insects, and small fish, and are popular pets, but their hardiness and large adult size mean they require significant, specialized care, including large tanks with proper heating, UV lighting, and filtration, and should never be released into the wild as they are invasive in many areas.
⭐️ Pet Care Requirements ⭐️
Tank: They need a large aquarium (e.g., 75+ gallons for adults) with a dry basking area, a ramp, and a powerful filter due to their messy habits. Many live happily in outdoor koi ponds!
Lighting & Heat: Requires both a basking heat lamp (around 95°F basking spot) and a full-spectrum UV-B bulb. They like it HOT!
Water: Needs a water heater to keep water around 85°F and requires frequent cleaning or a strong filter to maintain water quality. Turtles can produce a lot of waste so you need to make sure that you have a filter than can handle it!
