Welcome to Rounds on the Road!🩺

This series we’ll talk all things equine medicine through real-world cases and clinical experience. We’ll break down cases, work through differential diagnoses, share clinical pearls, and discuss things I think every horse owner should know.

Whether you’re a vet student, a fellow veterinarian, or a horse owner who wants to better understand the medicine behind your horse’s care, there’s something here for you. And I’m always learning, too, so let’s learn from each other!

But seriously — please don’t EVER give Banamine (flunixin meglumine) intramuscularly (IM) to horses. It can cause clostridial myositis, a rare but potentially life-threatening infection.

If you're not comfortable giving an IV injection, that's okay, you can give the injectable formulation orally. While it may not the best for repeated use, one time for a colic or emergency situation is fine. Ask your veterinarian about the appropriate dose for your horse.

We are almost there! I have to get my mini mule a new one every spring, and he puts it to WORK!

Don't be fooled, the fall grass is NOT automatically safer for your horse.🍂

Cool nights + sunny days can mean higher sugar levels in the grass, which matters for metabolic horses and horses prone to laminitis.

So yep… I’m still using that grazing muzzle. 🐴

If your horse needs careful pasture management, don’t let the change of season convince you otherwise. But don't worry - winter is coming! 😅
