You're not alone.
“What dog food do you recommend?”
It’s one of the questions I’m asked most often at farmers markets and events. And my answer usually isn’t a brand.
Our mission is to help pup parents add more real, whole foods to their dogs’ bowls. But when it comes to choosing a commercial dog food, I don’t believe there’s one “best” food for every dog.
Every pup is different. Their age, activity level, health, sensitivities and nutritional needs all matter. And so does something very practical: your budget. The right food needs to work for your dog AND be something you can realistically afford to feed.
So rather than telling someone what they should feed, I like to point them toward two resources I trust for doing their own research:
🐶 Saving Pets One Pet at a Time – Pet Food Reviews
https://savingpetsonepetatatime.com/pet-food-reviews/
🐶 Truth About Pet Food – The List
https://truthaboutpetfood.com/the-list/
Both offer information that can help you look beyond the pretty packaging and marketing claims and dig a little deeper into what you’re actually feeding.
That doesn’t mean I agree with every conclusion or recommendation on either site. You don’t have to, either. I recommend using them as research tools. Visit both. Read. Compare. Ask questions. Then come to your own conclusions based on your pup’s individual needs and your budget.
And if your dog has a chronic health condition, takes medication or requires a therapeutic diet, please talk with your veterinarian before making significant changes to their diet.
Feeding better doesn’t have to be all or nothing. Even if changing your dog’s commercial food isn’t right for you, there are simple ways to add appropriate fresh, whole foods to their bowl.
Do your homework. Ask questions. Read beyond the front of the bag.
Then choose what works best for your pup.💛
