Over the years, one of the most important lessons I’ve learned as a dog trainer is that the learning never stops. No matter how many dogs you handle or train, each one presents a unique set of needs, challenges, and opportunities. A method that works exceptionally well for one dog may not work at all for another.

I make it a priority to observe other trainers, watch educational videos, and attend training seminars whenever possible. Not every technique is appropriate for every discipline. A method that may not be suitable for a police K9 could be highly effective for an agility or obedience dog. While there are techniques I may choose not to use, there is still value in observing different approaches and understanding how trainers in various fields work.

The key is to remain open-minded and never assume you know everything there is to know about dog training. The moment we stop learning, we do a disservice to ourselves and to the dogs entrusted to our care.

Keep learning. Keep growing. Keep training.

Marshmallow, Cooper, and Cody working on their obedience today at Washington Waterfront. Great place to practice heel, sit/stays, and down/stays. Lots of distractions!

Took these two paddleboarding today for our Saturday adventures (separately of course). Samara and Gambit loved it! I may have to take them out to the big water next time!

Worked these three handsome guys today at Lowe's. Perfect place to work the dogs while getting out of the heat!

As we celebrate America's 250th birthday today, communities across the country will be filled with parades, festivities, and fireworks well into the evening.

Thankfully, my dogs are well accustomed to loud noises and are completely unfazed by fireworks. In fact, they'll often sleep right through them! Even so, every one of my dogs will be safely at home today. The dogs currently in my training program will be safely at home as well.

The reason isn't the fireworks—it's the heat.

Extreme temperatures can be dangerous for dogs, and heat-related illnesses can develop much faster than many people realize. I love my dogs, and Gambit goes almost everywhere with me, but I love him too much to expose him to unnecessary heat and stress.

Please consider doing the same for your own dogs. Keep them safe, cool, and secure at home whenever possible. If they must be outside, make sure they have access to plenty of fresh water, adequate shade, and a cool place to rest.

As someone who truly loves dogs, I would hate to see a preventable tragedy simply because someone wanted to take their pup out in a festive bandana or patriotic outfit to join the crowds. They'll still be just as adorable at home—and much safer.

Have a wonderful Independence Day, enjoy the celebrations, and please keep your four-legged family members safe.
