Today, I had some time to work on a little play and obedience with our girl, Nova! ❤️🐕
We focused on several things today, including:
🐾 Focused heels
🐾 Down in motion
🐾 Place command with duration and position — Nova remained in position until she was released and directed to another place
🐾 Targeting — focusing on her toy and maintaining that focus before earning her reward
🐾 Play, engagement & motivation
And let me tell you… Nova LOVES to work! 🔥
So, what’s the benefit of training like this?
It’s about much more than simply teaching a dog commands.
Training like this gives Nova both physical exercise AND mental stimulation. Mental stimulation is an important part of keeping dogs engaged, fulfilled, and learning.
It also helps build an even stronger bond and communication between Nova and her trainer, Kyle. When a dog learns how to work with their handler, understand expectations, engage with them, and earn rewards through that relationship, training becomes something they genuinely enjoy.
Nova is always eager to learn, work, and please and that motivation is something we want to continue developing. 🐾❤️
A well-rounded dog isn’t just physically exercised. They also need opportunities to think, learn, problem-solve, engage, and communicate with their handler.
And honestly, we believe something is very important when choosing a dog trainer:
Look at how they work with their own dogs.
Are their dogs engaged? Are they happy to work? Do they have a relationship with their handler? Do you see communication, structure, motivation, and respect?
The way a trainer handles their own dogs can tell you a lot about the relationship they strive to build with the dogs they work with.
