A newly published peer-reviewed study has examined the prevalence of Brachycephalic Obstructive Airway Syndrome (BOAS) in 14 additional brachycephalic breeds.
https://journals.plos.org/plosone/article?id=10.1371/journal.pone.0340604

The findings reinforce an important scientific reality:
β€’ BOAS is complex and multifactorial.
β€’ Internal airway structure, soft tissues, and genetic factors play major roles.
β€’ Visual appearance alone is not a reliable indicator of respiratory health.

Across breeds, higher body condition score and nostril stenosis were also associated with increased risk β€” highlighting the importance of responsible breeding and weight management.

One important finding stands out:
Extremely flat-faced dogs did not automatically show the highest BOAS prevalence.
Some very short-muzzled breeds had a considerable proportion of unaffected dogs, while certain breeds with more moderate head conformation showed notable levels of disease.

The study supports a breed-specific, evidence-based approach to improving canine welfare.

FCI remains committed to science-driven strategies that protect the health, functionality and future of pedigree dogs worldwide.

Purebred Pugs come in only two colors - Black and Fawn. While some standards recognize apricot and silver, causing confusion, these are genetically just shades of Fawn.
