Let’s talk decompression and proper rest. Most dogs who exhibit behavioral issues are not getting adequate rest time and the quality is poor. Kennel and tether training can help encourage and aid your dog to unwind, feel relaxed, and most importantly feel safe.
Dogs with behavioral issues that are out all of the time to do what they please in the home and outside every second of the day may get worse with time. Addressing the actual issues head on and not changing the way they live at home can make you feel stuck in your training journey.
Imagine having a week of getting sh*tty sleep. You’re irritable, crabby, and not in the right head space. You can drink coffee after coffee or take little 5/10minute naps when you can, but you still feel groggy. Only after a proper sleep (getting into that REM cycle) do you start to feel better. The issue lies in how we’re taking care of ourselves. Not the things that are making us irritated and bothered. Same goes for our dogs. Make the decision for them to rest, because they obviously aren’t making great decisions themselves in the first place resource guarding, living in fear, reacting to humans, getting over aroused by other dogs/animals, etc. At the very least, we should be the decision maker when it comes to rest for them.
It all comes down to willingness to change. We, as humans, do what we think is best for our dogs. However, most of the time it’s things that only make US feel good and happy. While those decisions may make us feel good for doing something nice for them, it may not be the best decision in terms of what they need on a neurological level.
Alumni Mac and Freya (above) are pros at decompression and rest time. Don’t worry, they get plenty of play and training time too. 😉 Their humans are doing a great job at decision making and determining when rest is needed.
