OMG, It's an Ethos: Dog Training Class as a Third Place

Once upon a time, we existed in harmony with the world, and everything made sense – maybe. All day, we saw people we knew personally, and we felt a sense of community where we lived. People talked and laughed together. We did not need an app on our phone to remind us to do something like exercise, drink water, or do chores. Dogs slept outside with bellies full of our food scraps, and they fought issues out without killing each other. Things made sense – or something.

Nowadays? Some of us wake up and immediately clock into work from home, squinting with bleary eyes at the Slack mobile app while still lying in bed. We strap our doggies to a tight leash to walk outside and make them beeline towards each other with puffed chests. They lunge and scramble to get in a few confused "last words" as we hurry past. We may choose to say nothing to our neighbor and continue to go hours and hours without speaking aloud to someone.

The simple fact of the matter is that, for many of us, combatting that haunting feeling of loneliness and disconnection is no longer as natural as breathing. And if you're an adult who has moved to a new city, you can put three exclamation points after that sentiment.

So where do you GO, besides home – and if you're maybe lucky or unlucky, work?

"The phrase “third places” came up more than 2,500 times over the last 12 months in academic and professional publications across disciplines... [It] was coined by the urban sociologist Ray Oldenburg in his 1989 book, “The Great Good Place.” It refers to spaces outside of home and work (one’s first and second places) where friends and strangers can gather unrushed — like cafes, bars, hair salons, dog parks and gyms. In some conceptions, the term refers to places where you don’t have to buy anything to hang out... Mr. Oldenburg’s coinage filled a linguistic gap — the value of public gathering spaces was well known but there was no term for it." (Where Have All the ‘Third Places’ Gone? By Ephrat Livni)

I often think about the fact that I will be a dog trainer for the rest of my life. A couple of years ago, I started to fantasize that if I were not training dogs, I would be organizing some kind of community center. And then I realized, "Wait a second. I'm already starting to do that, too."

I'm not going to tell you now that doggy group class will solve all of you and your dog's problems. But, as my Training Club Membership rounds its 2-year anniversary, a certain warm feeling has been blossoming for all of the familiar faces I see both human and canine alike – sometimes multiple times per week. It is soul-nourishing to watch everyone laugh and play with their dogs, challenge them to handle more distraction than they ever thought they could – and hell, even do doggy freestyle dance to the song "YMCA."

LOOK. THIS IS NOT YO MAMA'S ENRICHMENT BLOG POSTS. I write about MUCH more than how to combine cardboard and kibble.

I had always assumed that there was plenty of information online about enrichment for dogs. But when I went to find a good article to reference, I realized that they all sucked. Then obviously I had to write my own, HUGE list of enrichment ideas for you.

Send this to you coworker who complains about his poodle. (Sorry I'm late, Kristina.) Send this to your neighbor whose dog won't shut up. Use this guide to shake up your own routine. And let me know what you think!

Find these both for free on my website or patreon.

Here it is, my new ULTIMATE ENRICHMENT GUIDE FOR DOGS: https://www.venusandmarsk9.com/post/dog-enrichment-guide

And then, it snowed. So I had some to tips to share about dogs training in the winter: https://www.venusandmarsk9.com/post/cold-winter-training-tips

Winter brings some unique challenges for dog training. Your hands freeze, their paws hurt, and when you run back to hide inside, your dog can become a bored, destructive maniac. So, here is a list of cold-weather specific tips and recommendations for you!

Follow The Beasts Who Made Us!

This is a show centered around animal professionals focusing on the origin stories, paradigm shifts, feelings and spirit of our work and lives with animals.

We'll explore prompts such as: How did you view animals as a child? What animal changed your life long before you were a professional? What animal catalyzed your entrance into the industry? Which animals caused you to change how you think about specific behaviors or training? Besides your own pets, what animals have inspired you or changed how you think about something? What have animals done to keep you grounded? What animals have driven you crazy, and why? And how have animals have caused you to understand something about yourself?

I'm Cori Pedota, a professional dog trainer from Chicago, and I own Venus and Mars K9. I have a 10 year old blue heeler female named Mars and a 6 year old dutch herder aka Dutch Shepherd/malinois cross named Cupid. My dogs have both played a variety of dog sports, acted in movies, and they help me all the time with training client dogs. I grew up with miniature pinschers, parrots, hamsters, and guinea pigs and I spent a significant portion of my childhood running around pretending to be a wolf and drawing a comic book series called Super Dog and Super Cat. I was a debilitating shy child who found their voice through horseback riding lessons in middle school. In high school I, somewhat randomly, volunteered for 4 seasons at an equestrian theater - kind of like Medieval Times, if you have one of those by where you live.

I entered the dog industry sort of by accident at age 19, and I immediately fell in love with dog training. I have spent thousands of hours learning about dog training -- watching other trainers, buying online courses, attending seminars, and more. I have to admit, I'm a little jaded by a lot of the reductive conversation often happening about dog behavior - and I think it's made worse by short-form video content. My vision with this podcast is to both get back to the plot and revel in the nuance. And even though I am a dog trainer with many dog trainer friends, I want to talk about other animals, too. I hope you like it.
