Tuesday, September 8, the rules change on our beach.
Dogs come back — any hour of the day. Bikes on the sand and the boardwalk again. Canopies up to 12x12 instead of that one skinny umbrella. Surfing past 8th Ave North.
That's the payoff for putting up with the other nine months.
But here's what nobody's putting on a postcard:

Under the franchise agreements Myrtle Beach City Council signed in 2024, lifeguard staffing drops to 10 guards after Labor Day — and franchised coverage ends entirely on September 30. State water-quality testing shuts down October 1 too. All of that happens during the statistical peak of hurricane season, when the water's still 80 degrees and the beach is empty.
And the meters? Still running. Paid parking in Myrtle Beach goes through September 30. North Myrtle Beach and Surfside through October 31. Horry County's beach accesses are free year-round — which means for three weeks, the county line at Garden City is the only place on this Strand where a family can bring a dog and a canopy without feeding a meter.
Four governments. One continuous stretch of sand. Four different calendars, four different leash lengths, and not one sign telling you when you crossed.
We broke all of it down — every jurisdiction, every date, and the rules that never change no matter the season (alcohol, glass, fires, holes deeper than two feet).
